I know about the basic engine condition things but this the first Cleveland I'm looking at to buy (or hopefully swap for). Im going to look at a 351C / toploader combo and need to know what to look for. As far as the heads go, the casting numbers are in the same area (under the intake port) as other small blocks? 2V and 4V heads would have a 2 or a 4 in-between the valve covers and the intake? Would there be any info under the valve covers? There is and Edelbrock intake and a Mallory distributor on it so thats probably not much help. Its in a 69 fastback right now but it is originally an S-code car and that is why the guy is selling the engine and trans.------------------ Ed S. 68 S-code FB GT 4spd(now C6)/3.25 PS PDB 68 J-code(now 289) Cp Sprint"B" C4/3L00-9" PDB PS AC 99 F150 XLT Ext/cab, 4X4, 5.4L, 3L55

Would there be any info > under the valve covers? Casting codes (e.g. DOAE, ARD1AE, etc.) are located on the underside of one of the middle intake ports and foundry marks (CC or CF for U.S. heads) are located in the rocker arm area. The Aussie closed chamber heads I've inspected all have a sundial mark in the rocker arm area but Steve Liebenow has inspected Aussie heads without the sundial mark. The forum software will likely remove the formatting but I'll do an ASCII of the middle intake ports and foundry marks (CC or CF for U.S. heads) are located in the rocker arm area. The Aussie closed chamber heads I've inspected all have a sundial mark in the rocker arm area but Steve Liebenow has inspected Aussie heads without the sundial mark. The forum software will likely remove the formatting but I'll do an ASCII picture anyway. You may or may not be able to identify the cylinder head by means of raised numeral located as shown below: intake side numeral here --> -------------------------- <-- and/or over here | | | | | | | O *O *O *O *O 2| <-- smaller numeral -------------------------- possible here exhaust side where: O - represents a head bolt hole * - represents a sparkplug hole The larger cast-in raised numerals are located on the intake side at the top corners, near the valve cover rail. U.S. 351C-2V and 351C-4V heads will usually have the raised letters. Boss 302 and 351M/400 heads may not. Aussie 2V heads may not have the numerals on the intake side but the four that I inspeced have a smaller raised numeral on the exhaust side, down low near a corner head bolt. The odd thing is that three of the Aussie heads have a raised numeral 2 and the fourth has a raised numeral *4* (but it still has 2V ports). I've heard of 3's as well. Furthermore, Steve Liebenow has inspected Aussie heads that didn't have any raised numerals in this area.

Thanks Daniel!Anybody know what to look for on the 4 spd? I don't think I'll be able to drive the car but should be able to see and here it run with probably taking off a cover or inspection plate if possible.

Toploaders have a metal tag. David Kee's site has a decoder, print and take that with you. Toploaders have interchangible tail housings; if you buy the wrong one it won't bolt into your car. David Kee's site also has a tail housing casting number decoder. For some help with inspecting a used toploader see "buying used toploaders" under tech page at http://www.toploaderheaven.com[This message has been edited by Riley (edited 10-28-2004).]

I've got that infor but what about the clutch? Can I tell it's ok by looking at it? This should be all mustang stuff since it was working in a 69 S-code Mustang. The guy is going back to a 390.------------------ Ed S. 68 S-code FB GT 4spd(now C6)/3.25 PS PDB 68 J-code(now 289) Cp Sprint"B" C4/3L00-9" PDB PS AC 99 F150 XLT Ext/cab, 4X4, 5.4L, 3L55
