My son has a '73 Torino that we are trying to get to run correctly at the drags. It has run a best of 14.10 @ 94mph with a 1.8 sec. sixty foot time. One of the problems is that it not consistant. 1.8-2.2 sixty foot times (no tire spin) and 14.10 - 14.6 @ 92 to 94mph. I'm not sure where to set the timing and the carb probably needs help. Here's what we've got: '73 Torino...3900 lbs. approx. '73 Linc. 460-D3 heads double roller chain @ 0* mild hyd. mystery cam Stealth w/ 1" four hole poly spacer 800 D.P. 76 & 80 jets #31 non-tube squirters 30cc front and 50cc rear pumps 6.5 power valves front and rear stock mech. fuel pump ( I know) Hooker super comps w/3" exhaust and flowmasters Mallory unilite @ 32* total C-6 w/ 2500 stall 4.57 gears w/ mini-spool 29.5 X 9 M/T drag slicks Speedworld is at about 1300 ft. now running 70-80 degrees temp. The car will sometimes leave hard with black smoke and then bog and hit hard again. It doesn't seem to mph very well and I believe it should run 13's anyway. I don't know if the timing is wrong, should I lock it out and run full timing all the time (car sees no street time). Is the carb sized wrong or tuned wrong? I heard a rumor that 460's liked more cam advance, should I bump it 4*? I also have a set of 3.89's if you think they would be better. If there is anything else you need to know please ask, we're only getting 3 runs a night at the strip and it's hard to get a good baseline. Going out again Sun. and would like to do better than we've been doing. Thanks, Joe------------------ Joe--two '63 Fairlanes, one '72 Torino, and one '64 Falcon

Joe,You need a higher stall converter with a double pumper. You are bogging off the line and the black smoke is telling you that the accel. pumps are more fuel than the engine can take at 2500 rpm. I wish we knew what cam was in it, I'm guessing your 460 is a low rpm motor. How does it pull over 5,000 rpms? If it drops off early, the 3.89 gears would be better. Advancing the cam will move the torque curve even lower in the rpm range. That may help get it off the line with the low stall converter. Locking out the distributor is a great choice, but again the stall speed of your converter should be higher. You've got a mismatched combo for sure. Since it's not a street car, get a bigger cam lock out the timing, and match a converter to it. Then hold on.... SteveW

Steve, Thanks for the reply. I have a 780 VS that I could rebuild, would that be a better choice for now? I guess I got carried away with that 800. I also took 4* out of the cam when I put the 4.57's in it, you think I should put the advance and the 3.89's back in? What about the spacer 4 hole or open? Thanks again, I'll see what I can get done by Sun.------------------ Joe--two '63 Fairlanes, one '72 Torino, and one '64 Falcon

Joe, I'd try the 780vs next time out. Don't change anything else just the carb. Then after a few runs you could adjust the timing at the track for best MPH.------------------ SCOOP oddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs 65 coupe,351w,C4,Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8" 3.40 TracLoc. My Pics

Yeah I remeber talking you about it. Now the scoop alone will be worth good second or two.

Joe, try some larger nozzles before you change the carb.------------------ SCOOP oddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs 65 coupe,351w,C4,Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8" 3.40 TracLoc. My Pics

Ron, I think the first thing I'm going to do is put some more timing in it. Then do a plug reading and make sure it's close on jetting. I think that with the puff of black smoke at launch the nozzles may be too large now, but that could all change with 38*-40* timing in it. I'm bringing the 780 VS with me as a back up. I don't want to change too many things at once, I'll never figure out where the problem is (was). Thanks Joe

Joe, I could be way off. But the bog might be the car is to lean. The larger nozzles would help that. The black smoke might be from the wrong PV ?------------------ SCOOP oddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs 65 coupe,351w,C4,Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8" 3.40 TracLoc. My Pics

Install some shorter power valves for starters. Then after that improvment, you can kick up the timing to about 36 and maybe try some different disscharge nozzels.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,& '04 First SS/MA in the TENS!
