The easiest way to tell the difference, is that the Traction Lock has the ring gear bolts going into countersunk casting holes, while an open rear has a flat machined surface where the bolts go. Now, a Detroit Locker also has a machined flat flange, however, if you look inside the splined area that the axles go, a Detroit Locker will not have a steel pin visable in the center, where an open (& Traction Lock do have a pin. Your traction lock is a later version, without the added holes in the side cover, which caused the earlier units to crack the cover more easily.------------------ 78 Fairmont 428 4 speed 10.20@130mph 80 Fairmont 302 5 speed 12.8@105mph 85 Mustang NHRA M/Stock 302 5speed. Thanks for the info. May be getting a great deal on this one. One more thing - My 69 should have 28 spline axles, right?

Unless it`s a Boss car, or a 428CJ, yes it should be 28 spline.------------------ 78 Fairmont 428 4 speed 10.20@130mph 80 Fairmont 302 5 speed 12.8@105mph 85 Mustang NHRA M/Stock 302 5speed. [email protected] 59 Meteor (Canadian Ford) 2 dr sedan 332, auto 74 F350 ramp truck 390 4spd

Another way to tell it's a traction-lok is to look into the driver's side of the unit and look for a double row of splines. If the pumpkin is still in the car, then this double row of splines can be used as an identifier by pulling the drivers side axle and looking for a break in the wear pattern on the axle where the splines on the axle match up with the double row of teeth in the drivers side of the traction-lok itself.------------------ Ted E. Fe's are plenty fast, but "Y"'s are fun when they run in the nines.
