This came up in another thread, so I thought I would post some pics here. The NHRA/IHRA changed the rules for chassis certification for dragsters. All cars built after 1-1-03 must have "helmet bars" in the rollcage. Cars built prior to that must have them on their first recert after that date.I'm posting this as it may eventually effect some of you with door cars. Word is that the rule will be applied to altereds and roadsters very soon and to any car with a funny car style interior cage within a few years. I see many, many faster door cars with the funny car type cage.
The bars are the horizontal ones that wrap around the cage. In my case I kept putting it off as I didn't want to mess up my chrome cage. But, my chassis builder, Undercover Chassis, came out with a pre-bent kit that's already been chromed. You have to carefully grind off the chrome just where your weld bead will be. Then after final fitting, TIG weld the bars in using stainless filler rod. It blued the chrome just a touch from the heat, but they polished up well in just a few minutes with a drill mounted buffing wheel and polish. Looks pretty good.
The work was done by Mitch Perkins of Perk-Bilt Chassis near Montgomery, Al. If anyone in the southeast needs some work done I was totally impressed with his work.
Thanks,
David Cole
