I'm in the process of a cam swap, and noticed these deposits when I removed the intake.

They are primarily in the intake runners for cylinders 1, 4, 5, and 8.

They are black, and very sticky. If you look into the ports on the intake manifold, it looks like the deposits were splattered into the runner from the head ports. If you look into the head ports they look like they were splattered from the intake manifold.

Its like old grease, but very sticky. Engine oil still looks new, and theres no sludge buildup anywhere.

Any ideas what this could be?

How'd your intake gaskets look. Could have been sucking oil from underneath.

If you have a PCV system, it is possibly oil that is sucked in through the vacuum line to the PCV. It could be some reversion back into the intake from intake valves not sealing well on those cyl. Could be leaking intake valve guides on those cyls.& when another cyl(s) are on intake stroke, they are pulling from intake plenum which is also open down to the closed intake valve of another cyl thus creating a vacuum on the back side of closed valve causing oil to be drawn past loose guide/bad stem seal up into intake. Hope you can understand what I'm saying.
