I have a 69 cougar with a R code the motor
is a 428 SCJ were all R code car SCJ or were some just ram air 428

The SCJ cars had the Drag Pack option. Regular R codes were just CJs.------------------

Steve I have allways been with the under
standing that the drag pac did not come
out until 1970. So there is 3 cobra jet
motors the CJ the ram air 428 cobra jet
and the super cobra jet

Don't know about Cougars...but Mustangs had them in '69...got two buddies that both have them!

428 SCJ (DragPack) engines were certainly available in 69, a couple of years ago I rebuilt one for a friend who bought a 428SCJ 69 Mach 1 brand new, special order, with a C6 & 4.30 gears. In Mustangs, a 428 non CJ was a "Q" code, while a "R" code was a Shaker scoop equipped "ram air" vehicle, with either a 428 CJ or SCJ. Both engines used the same "R" code. However, when it comes to Cougars, I have seen several ram air 428CJ cars with the "Q" engine code. A local guy has a really nice 70 428CJ ram air Eliminator, he swears that he has never seen a "R" code Cougar, only "Q"`s.------------------
