My new ford ministarter just shreded it's teeth. I just learned that they don't work with the larger 164 tooth flexplate. Summit lists two Powermaster ministarters, one with 3/8 offset, the other with 3/4 offset. Anyone know which or whether they will work with the larger flexplate?

thanks,
Don

Must be a different number starter than the one I've been running for the last 9 yrs. I've been using it with a 164 tooth flexplate ever since I got it and never had any problems with it.

Yeah, I'm running a powermaster too. Works fine with 164 tooth flex plate. I didn't know there was supposed to be a different one.

The FMS catalog specifically states that SBF mini-starter (#M-11000-B50) will not fit "164-tooth manual transmission". However, it says nothing about 164-tooth flexplates.

The offsets and Powermaster starters:

289-351W/C Auto & 5-speed M/T (3/4? Offset)
Powermaster part#
9162 Ford type mini-starter 160ft lb (as far as I know this *IS* a Ford starter just sold by Powermaster, so no core charge)
9603 Nippondesno type 180 ft lb
9503 Nippondenso type 200 ft lb

289-351W/C 3 & 4-speed M/T (3/8? Offset)
9172 Ford type 160 ft lb
9604 Nippondenso type 180 ft lb
9504 Nippondenso type 200 ft lb

I like the Nippondesno type starter just for the fact that the nose piece is clockabble to many different positions to clear headers, steering, chassis, etc. Costs a bit more, but worth it.

I had a Powermaster 9603 on my 383W in my 69. I had a 164 tooth flexplate, used both stock and aftermarket. Worked great. I also have an identical one made by CVR on my 557 bbf. Works great as well. No problems.

Powermaster's site, with the starters :

The only difficulty we have ever experianced with mini 164 starter/flexplates was in conjunction with an "aftermarket" SFI flexplate.
Twice we had interferance issues when using FoMoCo or FRPP starters and SFI trans company supplied flex plates.
Replaced the unit with standard FoMoCo or Reactor, and problems went away.
