just tore down a low mileage 83 5.0, no ridge at cylinder top, very small scratches on cylinder #6, bearings look new. but, the timing cover is full of aluminum fillings, there is a wear pattern on the inside of timing cover thats quite deep, oval shape of fuel pump eccentric. Wondering what the fix would be to remedy this, i;m assuming the cam is walking against the front cover

the easy fix and inexpensive is to install a cam button. this eliminates cam walk and will also improve the where on the lifters.

The first question I have is the cam retainer plate worn on the cam side? If not I would guess a faulty two piece eccentric or timing chain and gear not seated. As far as the front cover, if it is not cut through, clean it up and re-use.Mike
