I installed a solid roller cam and billet timing gears in my winsor. After runnig the motor for 30 or so miles I cut the oil filter open for inspection and found metal debris. I opened the motor and found the thrust plate worn on the timing gear side (about .040). Do I need a hardened thrust plate or do I have other problems? I already checked the fuel pump accentric and its not contacting the timing cover. Thanks Scott

For a solid roller you have to use a "block saver" thrust plate. It is machined to accept a torrington bearing, some have two, one on each side. You have to have your cam gear machined to clear it, otherwise it is a bolt on. A solid roller's lobes are flat so there is nothing to contol end play, where a flat tappet's cam lobes are tapered, intake one way and exhaust the other to make the lifters spin and this helps control end play. The thrust plate comes with instruction on how much to machine off for proper end play which is somewhere between .008 and .018 I believe. The thrust plate kit is around $75 and machining is around $30.

Big Block boys are using a bronze retainer plate. Not sure if they make one for the little blocks?

If you run a billet steel timing gear you are required to use a steel thrust plate at the very least.
