i go to start my car yesterday, (its a 68 302) , and let it idle and what not, i go turn it off, and as i walk past the motor after its turned off, i hear a ticking noiise, it sounded like a time bomb or something. it was just siting there ticking for a min. , i checked to see of it was just something viborating, and i aslo checked to locate where it was coming from, it sounded mlike it was in the passenger side valve cover, or in that small area. im worried as to what it could be, any help is very appreciated, ive only been around motors and knowing whats what for about a year now, so i guess im a newb when it comes to that. thatnks-Phil

Sounds to me like the exhaust is just cooling off. My pipes tick very noticeably after shutting off the engine. It sounds like a metallic ticking right?

yup, it has headers, but i only ran it for like a minute, i felt them but they wernt even hot. it sounds like a clock ticking just fast, in an even pateren, no random clicks, just , tick(1 sec pause ) tick (i sec pause.) tick (etcccc...); it does it for ever then , just stops, im worried and frusteratd, i was wondering if it could have anything to do with the pushrods? im not sure :/

It ticks with the ingition completely off? Cause a bad volatge regulator can make a tick tick ticking noise but only when the ingition is on. Other then that if its not the exhaust id get a long screw driver or stethoscope and pin point where its coming from.

I've had several motors that did that. I just used a stethescope and pinpointed it to the hydraulic lifters beleeding down.
