Hey how many passes/miles do you get our of your high performance or race motor?

Let's take a look at the local bowtie's around Batesville just for kicks.

Let us compare some actual numbers of small town USA and race motor longevity, shall we? ( this is rich! )

Example: Local Bracket racers in my town.
7 Chevys total ( small town, I could have missed one? )

last month 5 motors, One in a dragster, ( 408 Alky injected motor) ....... one in a Mopar,( 408 chevy motor ) another in a malibo 385? ( Ron's toliet on this car ) then the second motor in the Mopar and another in a Mercury, yes it was an alky injected motor too. All with some damage, some minor some scattered. 3 of the 5 had to be rebuilt using new stuff.
and to be truthful one of the motors was a blower motor not running a front support, he was warned ahead of time.

One motor in a dragster had no failures.
the two other of the seven, one had no issues the other was being built. ( see this month for their problems )

Now I don't keep up with these guy's number of runs but I would guess under 80 passes. Lots of metal flying around here to be braggin boys. LOL

Now let's fast forward to this month..... 2 motors damaged that I know of.... both in pre-70 camaros, these were 6.70 motors in the 1/8th all good components, an ACE engine builder built them both.
One engine had less than 10 passes, the other maybe 80, just a guess.

all different cars, all small block chevies with varing degree's of build and weight vehicle. Now we MIGHT write one or two off to a faulty rod or something BUT all seven?
Is this normal? I know it has been Normal for around here for a long time.

Now I'm not making this up but I'm not going to name ANY names, mainly to protect these guys from looking stupid on a national forum. ( besides it'd be rude to name these guys, I actually hang out with them at the track )

Now let's see how many FORD race cars in town have torn up? None that I am aware of. I know of mine and one more, that is street driven but runs high 5's in the 1/8th.
To be truthful I haven't run mine a whole lot, but it has been raced enough lately to scope out any problems lurking inside.

I know of 4-5 more Ford race cars around North MS. only one has had problems recently due to a broken rocker arm stud.
That's one out of seven.

conclusions? I know a buddy of mine saw one of my rods back when I raced 351c's and he compared it to his stock 350 rod and he was amazed at the weak look of his compared to the FoMoCo piece.

I've tore up a lot of stuff over the years and oiled the track down more than my share of times. One oil down of my creation was at the bracket finals, and I was in the first race of elims for the day.

The fewest amount of passes I ever got out of a motor was 7, twice. The most I ever got was 355 in a season, but I did hurt that motor once (it didn't have to come out but the heads did come off at about mid season.)

Although no track time, I've got almost 5000 miles on my motor, and it sees 7000 rpm every time out of the garage
Periodic lash adjustments (largely un-necessary; more for tuning), periodic re-torquing of heads/intake, careful carb & ignigion tuning, capable cooling system, Royal Purple motor oil and high quality (Baldwin) oil filters. Oh yea... good parts, precision machine work and assembly

It has lost 4-5 psi of oil pressure at 800 rpm idle compared to when it was fresh; to be expected I suppose. I'll probably pull it down this winter to freshen it up

Jerry, as you know mine has been down since April. It popped an intake valve head (again ) damaging one of the Iron CJ heads & cracking #1 cyl. I have already sleeved cyl.bought parts & am awaiting machine work on the DOVE heads I ported along with an Ultrabell. Cant complain much, it had 423 passes on it, and had I checked the valve springs, probably would still be racing now.

beat my stock (with cam/intake) 90 5.0 motor from 93 to 02 without any failures and the motor had 70k on it when i got it. im guessing between 1200 to 1400 passes at the track with street time (it was my daily driver) and some highway miles driving from my base back to my hometown to visit many times. the first failure was a roller lifter keeper in 02(the little "x" that holds it in place) broke and it ate the cam/lifter. after i got the afr heads in 02 it broke a rocker stud (afr part)and the motor munched another cam/lifter/pushrod etc. it was enough to need a rebuild in 03. it would have lived on but i wanted to go through it anyway. the only thing i have to say about smallblock chevys is it seems like if you beat on them too hard, they start smoking. i think its probably the valveguides. i still like chevys though.

The 428 FE thats been in my Fairmont cranking out low 10`s @130mph (3100 lbs)has been in service since I built it in 1994, after hanging out a (stock) connecting rod in the previous 428, that one only lasted 4 years. Despite a fairly stock long block (original stock block, crank, rods, heads & valves), I believe my turning fairly low RPM`s helps considerably, I shift at 6000-6200 rpm, and I let it warm up fully before making any runs.Other than having to pull 1 head off last month, when a bowl vent fell into the carb & did some minor damage to #4 piston, the engine was not touched since a freshen 5 or 6 years ago. Built Ford tough? I think so!!

I think the opposite is what was rough on my motors. 7500 rpm shifts with stock rods, stock crank and heavy pistons in a thin walled block tends to get hard on things.
