Last weekend I got to try my new combination out. Once a year we turn are local airport in to a 1/4 mile strip. It was the best year so far by number of cars and how smooth the weekend went. I struggled to get my car ready for the races as I had numerous mechanical failures over a 2 week peroid. On saturday my car ran a 15.14,15.20,15.32, and 15.58. Not good as I put in a new motor and put in a 8.8 rearend with 3.73 gears. I took the car home that night and changed the carb reset the plug gap and borrowed a battery of a freind. Sunday morning the car ran a 13.74, I was very happy as that's what I thought it would run. Then I won my first round in eliminations beat a 4banger sunfire. Then I red lighted next round. It was a great weekend as I accomplished my 3 goals. Getting the car into the 13's, winning a 1 round of eliminations and beating my buddy in a heads up race.

Roger, congrats on a successful weekend. It seems like you really got a handle on tuning the motor to get your E.T. down.
What exactly did you do? "Change the carb"- to bigger or smaller? "Reset plug gap"- which way? Let us in on your secrets. Charlie

Roger, great new times
That has to be the best ET improvement from a battery change.
But really let us what you did ?

The problem was that the car would not rev fasten enough. The engine would rev past 7000 no problem but the car was not accelerating very fast. I was unsure if the secondarys where opening properly or if I was not getting enough voltage to run my ignition properly.
I'll back up the story, 2 weeks before the races I burned out the module in my unilite so had to install my old dual point. I never change the plug gap after the change and I had no way of knowing my total advance.
First pass I was traction limited, shifted the motor at 6500 and I noticed that I was 200ft from the finish line when I shifted into drive. I change my plug gap checked the timing and planned to leave the line at a lowwer rpm.
Second pass held the engine rpm at 1800, traction was bad, shifted the engine at 7000 and still was about 200ft from the line when I shifted into drive and posted my worst time.
Remebered that I never checked the air pressure in the rear tires. They were at 36lbs so I lowered them to 24lbs. Changed the plug to .035.
My car was hard to start after a couple starts so I would charge my battery in between rounds with my truck.
Third pass I tried to hold the car against the converter when launching but the tires started spinning before the lights came down. I feathered it and car improved shifting at 6000 but still was getting into drive till to late.
I wired the carb secondaries so they would engage manaully.
Fourth pass was a small improvment.
I went home changed carbs, changed the plug gap to .030 and then borrowed a good battery. First pass sunday morning I launched at 2500rpm shifted at 6000. Shifted into drive alot sooner and ran my best time of the weekend. Unsure what was the problem but I learned that from my 7 passes that it likes being shifted at 6000 not any higher. I need a new ignition and some cheater slicks.

The first carb I was using was a 750 vacum secondaries and the carb I switched to is a 600 vacum secondaries. The motor has run great in the past with a dual 4 set-up and ran a 850 with manual secondaries. I'm thinking my battery was not taking the charge and not providing enough voltage to run the ignition properly.
