will milling the choke horn off a holley 650 do more harm than good with reguard to the airflow into the carb? also, has anybody had any luck with k&n stub stack or the smooth base breather? ------------------ 306, 4speed, 4.11's....best 1/8 mile 7.58 at 92mph with 1.72 60ft. We milled the air horn off the 850 dp'r on the 408w with no problems. Do it, it's worth a few more cfms. SteveW

K&N also makes a stub stack for a milled choke horn, works slick. Roger

ok, i really dont care for the idea of dropping down the benjamins for a cowl hood. besides mine is so pretty. its not like im driving a sleeper (the cam blows that cover) but im almost sure a vic jr. would help me out on the clock. so if i mill the choke and run a thin (yuck!) carb gasket i might get by with it. ------------------ 306, 4speed, 4.11's....best 1/8 mile 7.58 at 92mph with 1.72 60ft. Chip- are you refering to a flat base air cleaner when you say smooth base breather? A recessed base with a radiused bottom will allow the air to flow more smoothly into the carb. Air doesn't like sharp turns, which cause turbulance. That is the principle for K&N's Flow Control Air Cleaner system. Even some factory air cleaner assemblies had a curved base that raised from the bottom edge of the filter to the opening of the carb. Just my two cents. Charlie

I hadn't seen the test, but I wouldn't use the K&N Extreme without a cowl or scoop. A buddy has a 'Cuda, without any fresh air induction-scoop, cowl, etc. that lost HP with one. The only theory was that it was pulling the hottest air out of his engine compartment which was the layer right below the hood. Otherwise I'm sure that it would be a great improvement to adding power to a motor. There is a lot of free area in the top of that air cleaner lid. Charlie

The K&N stub stack will help a lot with or without milling the choke. Also it works good on a flat or curved base. The flow control unit has a built it stub stack. The last thing I read said to try and have 3"-4" below the air cleaner lid or hood for best results.

are you saying the top of the carb needs to be 3-4" from the hood?------------------ 306, 4speed, 4.11's....best 1/8 mile 7.58 at 92mph with 1.72 60ft. PUMP GAS/NO ADDERS/STREET TIRES

It said for BEST flow 3"-4" from the highest point of the carb to the air cleaner lid or hood. They went on to say they lost as much as 35hp using a low profile air cleaner with a 2" filter on a carb with a choke.------------------ SCOOP oddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs 65 coupe,351w,C4,Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8" 3.40 TracLoc. Scoop, that makes good sense. Why throttle down all that air thru a large filter surface area by having it squeeze thru a restriction just above the carb?
