I've been itchin to get the heads bolted on tonight, and noticed the lower head bolt holes in these new 5.0 blocks are open to the water jacket. Can I get away without sealer? I'm using ARP bolts and they recommend their sealer. I hate to wait another couple days to get these heads screwed down, but if it's too risky I'll have to wait

Yep, you need to use sealer. I think that you can just use some rtv if you want to.

I have never used any sealer on head bolts on ANY Fords I have built, 289,302,351W and C, 428 and 460. No leaks ever, road use, drag race, sprinting and road racing. How come no leaks? Only ever used sealer on brand C engines. Curious
Cheers, Martin.

Earlier 289/302 blocks have blind holes. The headbolts do not touch water. Only the 5.0's are tapped into the water jacket. Why would you need sealer on a 289 or early 302 block? For bolts, I just use whatever lube the manufacturer recommends.

Well, good, bad or indifferent, I torqued 'em down last night with a concoction I came up with. I have an ARP catalog and the stuff they recommend for bolts going thru water jackets is a teflon-based sealer they use. I have some teflon based pipe dope laying around that had about the same description as the ARP stuff, so I used it mixed with a little bit of the moly lube . I'll find out this weekend if it worked when we crank 'er over

MOST 289-351 FoMoCo lower (short) head bolts go into the water jacket Mike.
Not just late 302's.
