I sent my bottom end out to a local guy to have it balanced. I'd decided to go with aluminum rods so I ordered up some GRP's and sent them down to the guy's shop so he could measure them for bob-weight and also fit some bearings up for them. During the course of the work he called me and said the rod side clearances were only .005" and he'd have to mill the rods to get proper side clearance. Well I got my stuff home yesterday and started test-fitting the motor together and now I find I've got around .038" side clearance Maybe I'm missing something, but when I stack two rods on a journal I can slide .038" worth of feeler gauge in there. My worst fear is he screwed up on his measurements somehow. This is the first time this guy's done work for me. He's a helluva nice guy and has a pretty good reputation. I'm hoping I don't have $800.00 worth of junk rods ------------------ '68 mustang 351 clevor- 10.92@124 '67 Stang, 351W -11.18@118 '69 351C Torino-14.90@100 '78 Pickup 351W-15.56@88 '79 Pickup 460 ET=??

Doesn't aluminum expand more than steel does? In which case, maybe he took that rate of expansion into account, so that at operating temp, they will be right in spec.

I have no experience with aluminum rods, but aluminum does grow a bunch more than steel so that may in fact be the case. I know that with my forged h-beams I've got .014 clearance; your measurement does sound like alot. Call him on Monday, but do be professional about it. Simply state what you've found and inquire about it ------------------ 1965 GT coupe, 333ci aluminum headed/solid cammed stroker, four speed, 3.70:1 9" All Blue Oval, no blue bottle http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/V8Thumper.html

Update: Talked to the guy and in a round-about way said he might have mis-measured. Although the clearance is loose, he says not to worry about it that I shouldn't have any problems at that clearance. So I'm continueing on He said with old style aluminum rods those kind of clearances were common. (BTW GRP recommends about .017 to .025., and upwards of .040" for nitro or blown alky combos )Anyhow, I hope to have this beast ready to put in the car next weekend, and be ready for the PRO-Edelbrock event at Maple Grove on the 27th.
