As I've mentioned before, I've got a 460 in an 81 F-100 that I plan to swap into my 68 F-100.

The details that I know about the engine: 1973 460 .030 over with stock heads. Performer 460 intake w/ small Holley 4bbl(where the heck is the model number on these?) RV cam of some sort. That's all I really know.

I've got a few questions that I can't seem to find answers for.

1 - What size exhaust am I going to need? It has stock manifolds and puny 2" pipe right now with glasspacks. I plan on getting headers when I put it into the 68 if I can find any that fit. I'm thinking it will want at least 3" pipe right?

2 - This is one heck of a powerplant already(more powerful than anything else I've ever owned), but I have the bug now and I'm looking for more. I'm pretty sure it needs more carb, but I'm wondering about the intake also. Should I be looking for a Performer RPM? I've been looking at the Weiand Team G intake too. Is it any good?

3 - The carb that is on it is running really rich. Where can I find some Holley tuning advice for morons?

I run 89 octane with ethanol if it matters. It's the cheapest around here and this thing gulps it down. Gotta pay to play right?

Anyway, I guess that's enough questions for now.

TIA

Joe

Joe, I'd use 3" pipes for that big boy. And as for the carb the Holley site as a ton of good info and I'll over any help I can. Email me or post on here.

This will help,

Do you have a 1" four hole carb spacer on it yet?

Here is some more Holley info,

Well, 2 1/2" pipe is plenty big enough if it is run thru a true dual exhuast, and doesn't have any ugly kinks in the pipe. The performer intake should work fine, unless you plan on spinning it more rpm. More than likely, it will require a little more cam, and some head work to make it run the best without spending a lot of money on it.

I don't know if you ever saw that old muli colored van my father pulled his 28' enclosed trailer with or not. It was an '85 1 ton, and had a transplanted 460 in it. The 460 was actually pretty mild, .030 over, dished cast pistons, PI heads, a performer intake, a Comp 280H cam, and a 750 VS Holley. The van had a 4.11 gear, and had A LOT of power. It had headers and 2 1/2" pipes into one BIG muffler, then exited the muffler with a single 3" pipe. I honestly think it had as much power as his relatively new powerstroke does. That van ran good. However, it got about 6 mpg with/without the trailer behind it.

Stealth will provide more volume then RPM
Rpm has smaller runners. Most run a Stealth. The Stealth sits concerderable higher then RPM so if you had hood clearance problems then the RPM would be your chioce.

Thanks guys.

Ron, I don't think I have the spacer. There looks like something under it, but it isn't 1" thick. No, it's not just the gasket. What does the spacer do?

I checked out those sites, but I still don't know which Holley I have. It said the number is on the drivers side choke horn, but the number I got off of it doesn't match any on the Holley list. I know it's a VS with electric choke.

Rob, I seem to vaguely remember the van. I don't know exactly what my MPG is, but I know it's not more than 10. Don't ever seem to have enough money to fill it up all the way twice in a row to check mileage.

You think 2 1/2" pipe is big enough huh? If I went bigger would I lose torque?

The only real clearance issues I have right now in the 81 is the air cleaner. It's close to the firewall. It has a 9" air cleaner on it. There's no way a bigger diameter would fit. I can only seem to find a 2" tall filter for it too. I'd like to find a 3" since it is such a small diameter.

Oh yeah, one more thing that is bugging me. Something in the accessories is making a squealing noise. Could it be just the belts? It's not like a loose belt squeal, it's a constant noise. More like squeaking I guess.

Anyway thanks for the help so far.

You wouldn't lose torque with that big motor. The only drawback would be finding a shop that could actually bend 3" tubimg without crushing it. Most muffler shops are lucky if they can bend 2 1/2" tubing correctly.

I agree with Rob, unless you just run the exhaust to dump at the axle with only a few small bends. Yeah 2.5 would be enough but 3" pipe on those big motors sound real good.

The spacers are said to increase low-mid power. They are kinda of a a hit a miss thing. They work on some set ups and do very little on others.

Whats the number on your carb ?

Thanks again guys.

I'll go pull all the numbers I can find off the carb later after I cool off. I've been fighting with the monkeyed up fan shroud and it's starting to get to me. It's kind of a jerry rigged setup, not big enough, so when the engine torques over, it scrapes on the fan.

I have a different one that is big enough, but it will have to be rigged too because the mounting locations don't match.
