I don't know if this article has been brought up before, but I found it interesting.
http://www.popularhotrodding.com/tech/0208phr_sherman/

The article is a motor build by Joe Sherman...of Mustang fame for his 400 HP 302.

Alex, I'd really like your comments on his choice to use a Carter carb...

Interesting enough. Kasse won the engine masters challenge and the engine isn't worth putting in a race car. The thing had a long stroke. http://www.popularhotrodding.com/enginemasters/challenge/2003/0405phr_emc/

On the other side.... aftermarket blocks, hows this. On the 460 block ppl have opened up the lifter bore then put a sleave in it to align the pushrod. They say that's good for 30Hp. Of course they have a cam built to adjust to the new placement of the lifter. I think the comment on using a new block is that all of the specs would be closer to the orignal "Blueprint" of the block. That's my guess.

See ya!
Les

Quoting the article,

"I've had really good results using these carbs on street-bound engines, and your 2,500-rpm pull range led me to choose this design. I needed a carb capable of high efficiency down there, and I feel this carb can do it."

Enough said,

I can garantee that was the case. But if Hooker is a sponsor, and Holley owns Hooker...couldn't he have used a Holley carb?

I have absolutely nothing against Carter carbs, Matter of fact that is what is on my Mustang. I doubt still if it was me I'd choose the Carter carb over a Holley for that intended use.

On a side note,

I have found that when I use like cfm (650 vs. 650)Carter and Holley carbs the Holley allways netted better times then the Carter.
But if I upped the cfm of the Carter 100 cfm more(750 vs 650) better times and better drive-ability then the Holley was the result.
Moving to a 750 Holley never gave good drive-ability and made marginal improvements in my times. BTW this isn't any of that out of the box crap the carbs were all tuned.

I always wondered if Carter and Holly use the same procedure to measure CFM?

Anyone else play with carbs like this? What was your experience?

Sherman used to work for Edelbrock.
He is a talented mechanic.
A Holley would have made more power.

I hopped over to Edelbrocks site, and Shermans name and the contest results are all over the site. Use the same part that helped Joe Sherman....
