My 69 Mustang has a nasty vibration in top gear(toploader)from 3000 rpm upwards and by 5000 it's pretty bad. It's definitely in the driveline as it vibrates when the car is stopped and rear wheels are off the ground.
So far have tried:
1) Running with no wheels
2) Running no wheels and no drums
3) running no wheels, no drums, no axle shafts.
4) All of the above with a fresh rebalanced driveshaft (plus one new UJ).
Run out of ideas now, anyone think of anything else?
Cheers, Martin

Tailhousing bushing was replaced recently. Also, both rear axle bearings are new.

Assuming it does NOT happen in the lower gears and only happens in top gear, its either a internal toploader issue, driveshaft issue, or rear end issue.

If you leave it in 3rd and take the rpms up to within the mph where the problem occurs and the problem is gone...toploader. If its still there...toploader, driveshaft or rear end.

Ah! Mr Blackford. I have seen you over on FM (I am not a member) and admire your '65 very much. Pity about the 'racing seat', it looked good.
The vibration seems to be speed related but your toploader comments bear thinking about. I may try running with no driveshaft in the morning to rule out the toploader. I also have another driveshaft (borrowed) to try. It's disconcerting to get the car up to 5000/5500 rpm in 4th (3.25 rear) and have it shaking badly. I need to fix this before the next race.

I take it that it doesn't do it in neutral, so it's not clutch or engine related. I was chasing my vibration for years and I replaced the driveshaft and tailshaft bushing along with the pinion angle. Finally have it so I can drive it. Still have some vibration which could be in the T-5 or the rear gear back lash. Still working on it. Good luck with your's and let us know what you find.

Don't forget to take all the belts off and test it that way as well when it's up in the air.... I've found belts can cause a vibration as well.

Martin,

I'd pull the center-section and see if you've got a missing tooth or two.

First to reply to above posts - teeth are good in the rear - recently rebuilt the TracLock so all was checked and good. Also vibration does not occur in neutral or lower gears as driveshaft not turning fast enough.

Ok, little update after today's efforts.Tried running with no driveshaft - no vibration (well, just a little but OK) Tried the borrowed driveshaft - seemed much better than with my own DS. Had a good look at it and found the UJ caps are 1 1/16" on mine and 1 1/8" on the borrowed DS. Dug out some spare caps (right size) and it seems much better now and probably about as good as it can get. So, thanks for the replies guys and keep an eye on the UJ sizes when changing them. My excuse is this DS was with the car when I got it. HTH
Cheers, Martin.

My 6T6 always had a vibration at highway speeds and nothing seemed to cure it.. Then a partner of mine asked if the driveline was align perfectly straight with the differential?? When I told him it looked pretty straight to me,, he suggested to add a couple of wedges under the leaf spring perches,, putting a an angle (2-3 degrees down) at the 3rd Member/Drive Line..

Tried it and the vibration went away.. When you accilerate,, torque will make it straighten back up,, but when cruising it always has a small angle..

Summit sells the wedges..

Thanks for that Don, this is about the only thing left for me to check and I haven't done it yet because I can't find an angle finder anywhere! I will keep trying and as sson as I find one, it will be checked and adjusted as necessary. FWIW, it does *look* like it's right!
