I was looking at my engine choices and was contemplating keeping my 289. Who makes aftermarket frods for the 289, lightweight if possible ? Can I use 302 rods and if so, do I need different pistons? Thanks, mike.

The Mustang Depot Ebay seller. I bought a set of these from him 2 years ago for $299. Now they are $294...a great deal for H beams. I used these rods in a custom designed 331 stroker. Are you building a 289 or a stroker? Reason I ask is that stock 289 rods in a 289 with ARP bolts are good to 6500+ rpm. 289s with their short stroke and the rods with relatively short length (thus less moment arm reducing bend) are good with stock rods and ARP bolts. I would have used them in my 331 except for the fact that these rods from TMD are so reasonably priced.

I was thinking that I wouldnt stroke the 289. So you are saying that the stock rods with new rod bolts are good to over 6500 rpm? Also, who makes a good lightweight piston? I was reading that lightweight pistons make more power then standard pistons in similar engines, is this true? Thanks, mike.

Yes, those rods are good to 6500 with ARP bolts. Shotpeening would provide a little insurance but is probably not necessary for most street/strip 289s. Lightweight pistons may be available from keith black. Any time the skirt is reduced (a long rod motor or a stroker), friction is reduced and HP increases.

Crower, Eagle, Manley, and Oliver all offer 289 5.155 length rods.

I used semi-polished stock rods with ARP bolts for years spinning 7000rpms. It was my daily(only) car for many years(about 10). My motor finally gave out running at the Silver State. It would have helped if I had installed an oil cooler. I ran at 6500rpm+ for almost the full 90+ miles. It still wasn't the rods that gave out it was two of the pistons. It looked like they got a little too hot. I still finished though.

Jazzy, thats just what I wanted to hear! But I have a question, what does semi polished mean, and could I do it myself?
