doing some wiring that i had put off for about a year since i started installing the shifter

got the reverse light figured out, i complete the circuit only in reverse, but the neutral safety switch that came with the kit is closed in P and N, where as the stock ford deal is open in P and closed in all others. Any idea how to wire this up so it'll work fine?

for clarification open means the circuit is not completed, and closed means circuit is completed. I'm not sure everyone uses the same lingo as i do.

kit was a b&m starshifter, and i'm not very good with wiring

Dubz....
That switch should only have two wires going to it...one in....and one out, to the starter solenoid......it will only allow the starter to engage in either park or neutral......hope this helps.....

well i guess i found something further down the line, as this was on the selector lever with the reverse light switch...hrmm

would this be a switch that shorts that circuit possibly? so when it is open it can start, and in gear it can't?

i noticed mechanically i cannot turn the key to the start position in gear (on the column) but when the column shift is in park i can. but i'll need to fix the column shifter in park so i can remove the key when i shut the car off.

maybe i should get a bicycle cable and attach it to the new shifter to the column selector so i get the same "can't take the key out in rnd21" and the manual lockout as well

just read that some of the early 70's fords including my year that had column shift autos did not have a neutral safty switch. it was a mechanical deal where you just could not turn the key in gear...so now i need to locate my starter wire that goes hot to the solenoid to start up the car.

No idea what the other wire was now

There is a mechanical linkage between the trans and the steering column that will lock the shifter when the key is turned off. The linkage inside the column should allow the key to start the car in Park or Neutral...in case it stalls you should be able to re-start the car while rolling in neutral.

yah, i found the mechanical linkage. Car will have to be in park on the column at all times now, so mechanically the key can be turned to start the car. I put in the neutral safty switch in the line that goes to the starter solenoid (after cutting 2 wrong wires inside the cab that were the same color code i cut it under the hood to avoid another mistake) so now the car will only start in park and neutral on the b&m.

so i'm pretty sure i got it working now only took 3 days

HOPEFULLY.....the steering column won't lock when the lever position is in park....THAT might just prove to be an even BIGGER problem

hopefully i don't bump the key into the off position and lock the steering wheel at an inapropriate time. if i let the gear selector on the column stay moveable i could move that into gear to lock the key in so that won't happen though. Just have to get in the habit of when turning the car on moving the selector right away.

would getting an aftermarket wheel like a grant one make it not lock?
