What do you guys think about this?
I think it's a bunch of crap! Just another example of the nhra screwing over the little guy who supported them for years and bowing over to big time manufacture money. I think if a person has enough money to buy one of these cars, he has enough money to make it legal to meet the same rules we have to go by.

They've been working on this for three years now. It's just for TnT's and grudge night racing I think. Anyway, it may get more people to the track so I don't mind. Truth is a modern Viper is much safer stock than a '66 mustang both running high 11's. Wouldn't you agree? The early 'stang needs a roll bar and 5 point harness just to equal the Viper's air bags and crumple zones, not to mention the modern collapsable steering collums, anti-lock brakes, etc.

NHRA Quote:
As an example, under existing Summit E.T. rules, a convertible running 13.99 and quicker must have a driveshaft loop and roll bar. Under the new rules, a pure-stock street-legal car will not require this equipment unless it runs 11.49 or quicker.

This is saying that I could run a convertable 11.50 with nothing but a factory seatbelt and no drivshaft loop. That's crazy, I don't care how safe they "think" the engineers have made the car. Someone, somewhere is gonna get killed.....or worse!

i do not know a company that makes thier car well enough to withstand a roll at the speed a 11.99 car would be going at the end of the 1/4....i think the old rules were a better idea, i just hope nobody gets hurt

The safety standards today are much higher than they were in 1970! These cars can run in the 11's on the street, why not let them run in a controlled enviroment at the strip, which is much safer than the street? Where is the new new owner more likely to get killed? Your arguement says they shouldn't make new cars that fast!

Both the factory seatbelt, and the driveshaft is much better engineered today than 30+ years ago. Not to mention the gas tank isn't in your backseat, the steering columm won't drill your chest, the car has crumple zones, the top is an integral roll bar, the doors have side bars built in, the fuel shuts off on impact, I could go on and on. Give it up guys, I think NHRA is right!
