I just purchased a pinto chassie drag car.The person I bought it from could not tell much about the heads, except they are Roush heads.I know they are SVO high port heads. What I don't know is what version. The part number is MZ-6049-B3,phase 1 1/2.I know A3 heads are phase 1 and B351 heads are phase 1 3/4 and the C302 heads are phase 3.What intake gasket do I use?The intake that is on it is an Edelbrock M-9424-_351.Between the last dash and the 351 in the part number is blank. The block is a production 351W.The intake has no water neck built in.Can someone tell me what heads and intake I have and what intake gasket I need and where to buy them?

Those are early B351 heads. There should be a pad with a cast-in date
code which will tell you the date they were cast. Sometimes the spring
pocket cuts into the date pad, so a few of the numbers may not be visible.
My guess is they are 1985 or earlier. Check the shape of the exhaust
flange where the bolt holes go through. Is the top flat or is there
a corner that sticks up?

Not necessarily true. Only the early versions of the heads were Phase
versions and any of the heads could have any of the Phase numbers.
For instance, I just sold a set of Phase 3 B351 heads and still have a
set of Phase 1 1/2 A3's with narrow intake ports. From what I gather,
Ford would make special versions of these heads for certain race teams.

I think the only ones currently available are Fel-Pro 1229. Depending upon
which port configuration you have, these may be too narrow (they fit C302's)
but you can open them up to fit (place against head and tap with a ball peen
hammer to trace the port). I've got a couple of sets of the Ford Motorsport
A3 width gaskets but I don't they are listed any longer.

For exhaust gaskets, you have a choice between:

Fel Pro p/n 1417: A3 cylinder heads (1.94" diameter round port size)
Fel Pro p/n 1431: B351/C302 cylinder heads (1.81" diameter round port size)

For headgaskets, you'll want Fel Pro p/n 1021 for up to 4.1" bore. I use
the left and right-handed gaskets (p/n 1022 and 1023) on my race block
(4.1" bore Fontana block).

Another gasket that might come in handy is the double thick valve cover
gaskets. If you have clearance issues with roller rockers and your valve
covers, Fel-Pro makes part number 1636, a thick three layer (cork-metal-cork)
valve cover gasket which improves clearance.

I'll need to see a picture to be sure. Does it actually say Edelbrock on
it? The intakes with the blank pad that I've seen were all Roush. If it
is an Edelbrock, look on the bottom for a part number. Is the carb pad
very thin like this intake:

or is it more like:

Flatlander and Summit carry them but any Fel-Pro dealer ought to be able
to get. I just bought head, intake, and headers gaskets for both C302B
and A3 heads and was surprised to find that Summit had them in stock.
Be aware that your heads may have the early exhaust bolt pattern which
has the upper row of bolts about a bolt diameter below those of the later
heads. Fel-Pro's header gaskets match the later heads.

Other stuff you may or may not know about, high port heads require one inch
longer head bolts/studs (use hardened washers). A3's, B351's, and early
versions of the C302 heads had one short bolt. Later C302B's got common
length bolts. High port heads use Motorcraft AG-series spark plugs (14 mm,
3/4 inch reach) with gasket.

The high port heads come with combustion face and front and rear coolant
outlets which get plugged with aluminum pipe plugs as needed. Where the
plugs go is a function of the block, whether or not the intake has a coolant
cross-over, and whether or not you run a remote coolant cross-over. For
instance, if you put high port heads on a Windsor style block with a coolant
cross-over manifold, the plugs go in the ends and the combustion face and a
0.8" hole is drilled at the coolant cross-over. The supplied instructions
illustrate the options. Use a thread sealer and make sure the plug is below
or level with the deck surface.

Thanks very much.I called Summit about the gaskets and they said they could not help me.I found the right at BLP.They intake ports measure 2.200 x 1.400.The intake looks like the second picture you had listed and it does have Edelbrock on the number one intake runner.Again THANKS.
