For the first time today after doing alittle hard driving. My car got to about 195-200 and then would cool right back when I would drive it. I did change the cap from a 12lbs to a 13lbs because the other cap keep filling up the overful and the new one doesn't. Not sure if thats good or bad.

Other wise the motor as always stayed at 180-185 until today. Now keep in mind it's high humidity and about 90 degrees out.

What rated cap should I run, is 13lbs ok.

Thanks Alex, but if 200 is safe I'd like stay around 160-180. I'm now running a 180 stat will a 160 help to keep it from getting over 180 ?

I think 13 lbs is fine, the spring on the 12lb cap was probably just old and tired.

160 water would probably make a little more power, if the engine is hot it heats the air up as it tries to breath it in, so the engine gets less dense air+fuel and hence less power. Someone probably has a rule of thumb for %Hp per degree?

I use 14 lbs cap myself. But If 13's not leaking you're fine. Rebuilds sometimes run a little warm for 500 miles or so and then calmed down. Mine stays around the "E" on the stock TEMP guage mostly but can go up about midway while in the staging lanes on 90-100 deg days. I have no idea what degrees that really is but it never spits up. When you tune a carb lean it tends to run warmer.

Scoop,

Just a thought. I cant really tell but in your pictures it looks like you have an electric fan. Make sure you didnt somehow turn the thermostat switch on the fan higher. Maybe your fan isnt kicking on early enough.

Thermostats only regulate how quickly an engine gets up to a certain temperature, they don't have any control how high the terperature gets.

The fact that your coolant gets back down to normal temperature after driving it hard tells you your cooling system is working well.

Steve it was only at idle yesterday that it heated up. Once I took it back on the road taking it easy it came right back down to 180-185.
I just hate the idle of having to buy yet another radiator. If what I have now doesn't workout. So I was reaching for an easy sulotion. I just replaced the radiator, water pump, heater core and all the hoses. I have a 4 row now, so I guess the next step would be an alum model. I just can't see paying $500 for one.

No, you are all set the way you are. 90 degrees and humid are extreme conditions to being idling around in.

Fastymz, I have an aluminum radiator that I got from summit for under $200. It's the summit brand but it works awesome. If you end up needing a new radiator I would highly recomend the summit brand aluminum radiators.

But I don't think they have both the inlet and outlet on the passenger sides. If I'm wrong about that it would be worth looking into if needed.

Do you have any kind of shroud on it? At slow speeds, will help alot.

I use the black magic electric fan with a built in shroud. It pulls a lot of air too.

Fastymz, you are correct. The top inlet is on the passenger side and the bottom inlet is on the drivers side. I ended up buying a water pump for a 70 351w which has the drivers side outlet. mike.

I could do that, but then I'd have to change my balancer too and my timing pointer.

Ok, does the built in shroud seal up well to the back of the radiator? Air will leak through gaps alot easier then being pulled through the radiator, can cut down the efficiency of the fan alot.

Yeah it has a nice rubber seal all around it. So no air will get past it. Also the radiator has no openning around it either. Thanks for the help and tips.

Scoop...Sounds to me what Steve said...90 degrees and sitting at idle is a pretty extreme temp to be sitting still in. That's like sitting in traffic...not enough air moving through the system. Once you get moving you have more of an air current passing through to cool things off.

I think you'll be fine! ...gr

P.S.- I thought it was DRY and no humidity in Nevada!

I went to school at UNLV in Vegas for a short while...LOVED the weather...NEVER sweat at all!

Scooper , sounds like it's fine to me. The 180 thermostat could be swapped for 160 but it won't have a big effect. High humidity for that area is what... 10% ? LOL

I am planning to hit Reno for H.A.N again, i'll have to meet up with you and go for a ride.
