I'm hoping to improve the chances of a succesful cam break in to around 100% this time. What would be the best weight oil to use during break in? In the past I have used 10W40, which Isky said was fine, but this time I'm thinking of using 20W50. What do you guys think? Any one brand best for this. I am planning to use Castrol GTX. I'm really gun shy this time around.B-loose

I was told to use 30w oil for break in. As long as it's warm out.------------------ SCOOP oddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs 65 coupe,351w,C4,Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8" 3.40 TracLoc. My Pics [This message has been edited by Fastymz (edited 06-16-2004).]

Here's a good article from Crane on cam break-ins and failures. Read it carefully: http://www.cranecams.com/?show=faq&id=1It might sound crazy but I use Chevron Delo-400 15W40 diesel oil for my beak-ins and even afterwards. It has a HD additive package and meets higher standards than regular 4 stroke gas oil. After about 7K miles of wear-in on the cylinders, then I mix in a quart of Mobil 1 Synthetic for more wear protection. I change oil and filter immediately after a break-in and then after 1K miles and then got to 3K miles ever after. ------------------ 1966 Mustang Coupe: Custom glass hood and BIG scoop sits atop a 289 stroked to 331 c.i., Steel crank, rods and girdle, TFS alum. heads, Stealth 8020 intake, Xtreme 268 Solid Roller, Holley 750 HP, long tubes, 4speed, 9" 3.50 posi. 11.86 @ 116 mph (7.62 @ 93 mph)daily driver! My brother is diesel mechanic for a large brewing co.. They run Delo in everything!! including lawnmowers. It's a mechanics secret so don't let it get too far. One inportant note: Not remmended for use with catalytic convertors. It's against EPA regs. ------------------ 1966 Mustang Coupe: Custom glass hood and BIG scoop sits atop a 289 stroked to 331 c.i., Steel crank, rods and girdle, TFS alum. heads, Stealth 8020 intake, Xtreme 268 Solid Roller, Holley 750 HP, long tubes, 4speed, 9" 3.50 posi. 11.86 @ 116 mph (7.62 @ 93 mph)daily driver! So you use the Delo-400 all the time ? I've never even heard of the brand. It's a better then all out there ?

Zinc is a high pressure anti-wear additive. Problem is, it's not good for catalytic converters. For this reason, the EPA has been banning it from motor oils that are used on the highway. Chances are, if the oil you are using is rated for gasoline engines (this includes the vast majority of diesel oils out there) it no longer has the zinc. You may want to do some more 'research' to find the particulars. You guys run delo all the time? I was told it was a bad idea, I know that it has lots of detergents so your motor will stay cleaner, but are they any other benefits to it?

Isky included a bottle of break in lube which is essentially a zink additive. Most motorcycle oils also include a higher level of zink. Some automotive oils do have a little left in them but most have gone away from it becuase of the EPA as mentioned. In my VW I am required to run synthetic diesel oil, non-syn diesel oil does not meet the requirements I think mine is CF4. Even standard synthetics do not meet the rating. Also, I have never seen a diesel oil that does not have the SJ (or whatever the latest rating is) rating, so there should be no problem what so ever running it in a regular gas mtor. Are other diesel oils good for break in guys? I have 4 gallons of 15w40 oil for my bus. I think it's from US oil. B-loose

15W40 is generally a HD oil package. Look for API SJ, SL, or CH-4. That's all I'm gonna say. ------------------ 1966 Mustang Coupe: Custom glass hood and BIG scoop sits atop a 289 stroked to 331 c.i., Steel crank, rods and girdle, TFS alum. heads, Stealth 8020 intake, Xtreme 268 Solid Roller, Holley 750 HP, long tubes, 4speed, 9" 3.50 posi. 11.86 @ 116 mph (7.62 @ 93 mph)daily driver!
