Any one have a guess where my motor should be maikng peak power. Because it sure does seem to like 3800-4300 rpm.

It's a 270h cam if that helps.

I'm thinking I'm real close to peak torque at 3800 rpm ?

RPM 2.02 heads, RPM intake, holley 600vs, 2200-2400 stall, and 3.40 gears.

Ron,
Not a real good comparison, but, when I had the 270H in the 347, torque peaked at 3200-4100. Hp peaked at 5700. Of course that is with 1.90" RPM heads.

Mike,

That should be close to Ron's combo, his may peak a little higher once he gets a good carb on top of it.

You got mail too John thanks.

Mike, thanks that was kinda of my guess. I've not had the motor over 4200 yet. But I can tell it really likes the 3500-4000 range.

Steve, Yes bigger carb next on the must have list.

Why would the 2.02 heads make a difference in peak RPM range ? I'm starting to think the heads are alittle over kill for now. I think they would work better with a bigger cam and exhaust.

What you "feel" seat of the pants is torque not power. If (in a given gear) the car really picks up at around 4000 then thats peak torque. Peak power is important only when you consider your gear ratios and shift points. Its a little confusing but I would need to draw some diagrams to help explain...

Shift points, is it better to aim for peak HP or Torque ?
I know the best thing to do is take it to the track and see where it runs the best at. For now I'm just doing alittle bench racing. And it also gives me a good starting point.

Ron,

You want to launch at peak torque and shift slightly above peak h.p. Keeping the engine between those two peaks will run the quickest.

I too have the 270H cam and feel that it pulls best between 3.5-4.5K.

torque is getting something to move
horsepower is the power need to keep moving it. torque is accelation hp is top speed (mph). I hope This helps and does not confuse you as I have that effect on people, lol
