Well, finally thought that I could put the 306 together after a line bore, but no. The cam bearings only have 600 miles on them, and the measured fine, with mics and telescoping gauges, now after coming back from the machine shop for a line bore, the back freeze plug was gone and the bearings appear as though the were mushroomed from top to bottom, but they still measure right from left to right? The bearings don't hardly look worn, but they have between .004-.006 clearance up and down and .0015-.002 side to side, so what gives?

The machine shop probably used a bar running through the cam bearing bores to hold the block while line boring the mains.

Well, I put new bearings in myself using the parts stores tools and they went in great. Now the cam turns a little hard, but not like is rubbing the bearings bad, just snug, does this sound o.k. to you? Dad said that it will break itself in, and not to worry about it, it won't score the bearings. What do you guys think? Hopefully it goes together soon!

you fixed it yourself. Sorry to hear about all the bad luck you've been having. I sure hope it's fixed and ready for summer fun now.

You can use an old cam as a cutting tool for the cam bearings. Cut grooves at an angle using a die grinder or similar. Slide it in using something for a lubricant/cutting fluid and turn it around.

Hey, thanks for the great tip Dan. I used the good cam and turned it a few times and it showed where it was rubbing and I polished it with some 2000 grit sandpaper, and now the cam is smooth as silk! It was the top of the 2nd cam bearing. Thanks for the good luck Scoop, this thing has been a pain, but finally, the crank is in, and the cam is in, a good start anyway. And yes I did it myself because I figured if it has to be done right, I might as well do it myself, the worst I could do was screw it up, and that's happened so many times with this motor because of other peoples mistakes, it doesn't bother me anymore.

Sandpaper on bearings? I hope no grit is embedded in the bearing now. The usual approach is a bearing scraper.

Nope, no sand the in the bearing, it is 2000 grit, so it feels smooth as glass to the touch, and I completely washed the block again to make sure everything is clean!
