Just wondering what are some of the ways you guys have lost a race due to stupidity. Your own stupidity, brain fart or whatever. I pulled a real boner last night in the first round. Car was running good in time trials and I was doing good on the tree. First round I dialed a 4.96 (1/8 mile). Was running a much slower car dialed at 6.98 so I was crossing over with the box. Staged, his first bulb came on and I let go of the button. My car launched *then*, before my side of the tree came down. I'm thinking electrical problems and the transbrake didn't hold. So I shut it down and coasted off the track. Everything tested fine on the return road and pits. Didn't see it until I drove the car into the trailer. I put his dial on my side of the bix and mine on his side. Smacked myself in the head. A doouuuhhh moment for sure. Later, David Cole ------------------ 557 BBF Powered, alcohol injected rear engine dragster. 4.90 @ 143 1/8 mile. 1.09 60'. I've got to be crazy to drive this thing. I hate crossing over. I don't really like box racing, it should be NO BOX all the way. Yeah, I've done some crazy crap before.... too numurous to recall. I try to forget them ASAP.

I'm new to racing so every run I learn something the hard way. I now make very sure I'm back in first after my 3rd gear burnouts. Also learned that turning off the bottle, but leaving the arming switch on puts a lot of extra fuel in the intake... Slows me way down.

You'd need to start a new website Mike. I don't race a lot but I've done some really dumb things that I don't care to talk about. ------------------

I race a lot, or at least used to, and have done some really dumb things I don't want to talk about.

first time ever on the track with my 76 f100 did a john force burnout past the beams on my pegleg right radial.....backed up until the two stage lights were on. i had staged my back tires. first time racing with my toploader, a little nervous....you know just how close reverse and first can be? the crowd liked it but if i had a paper bag to put over my head it wouldve probably caught on fire.------------------ 306, 4speed, 4.11's....best 1/8 mile 7.58 at 92mph with 1.72 60ft. Sunday bracket race.....not too many cars....plenty of "extra" time trials......first round of eliminations..... .502 light and I'm boogying on down the track.....hit high gear....(C-6 tranny).....and then the motor sputters, coughs and goes silent.....the only sounds I hear are my opponent going by me and an annoying hummmmm coming from the rear of the car....... ....car coasts to a stop not far past the finish line....track personel come tow me back to the pits....girlfriend sitting on trailer with s**t eating grin on face and gas can in hand.....asks, ever so sweetly..."forget anything, Honey??".........Grrrrr......I married her anyway

I was about 2 or 3 rounds deep when it was getting dusk. I'd have to have my taillights working for the next round... but I knew they wouldn't work because of a recent short I'd had. So I was working furiously in the pits to wire up the taillights. Finally found the right wire under the dash and jumpered it to a hot lead in the fuse panel. I walked to the back, saw the taillights were lit...cool...so I jumped in the stang to get in the staging lanes. Turns out I was paired against a kid from my town I didn't like. He had a tubbed Camaro, married into money, and his daddy-in-law was funding his whole deal. What's more, I kinda got him turned onto drag racing, so I really wanted to beat this pudd! Anyhow, we line up, I bury him on the start and end up braking hard at the line. No way did I lose! Went and picked up my time-slip ...DISQUALIFIED!! They said my lights weren't on! So I get back to the pits, go to the back of the car, lights are on!! Then my buddy comes over, shuts my driver's door...and the taillights go out! I'd hooked the tallights to my domelight circuit! ------------------

Rusting, now that?s really funny... Well, I guess this thread has turned into more of a dumb move thread more then tricks. I have one that stick in my head... One, which I still laugh at, was in Gainesville. I was finally in the money and racing a good friend of mine. Even though we always tried to avoid racing each other until the final round to try to make a 1 - 2 Ford win or at least have one Ford finishing good for the event. Also, my wife was videoing me that day and got permission to be on the track to do so. I was running MT slicks and they didn?t need that much of a burn out, plus it was very hot that day, and she asked me to do a smoky burnout for the camera... so I did. Got the tires too hot and lost the race right off the line when I went up in smoke at the start of the race. My buddy still bugs me about that.

Ok, first time at the track in over 15 years. I stage great until the this guy scares the heck out of me pounding on my window. I roll it down and he says son the starting line is about 10 feet behind you. No wonder the lights were so hard to see. Second pass, I knew why they call them head liners, because with the windows down the full run my headliner was down around my ears. I got alittle lecture for that one too. Later that day some how I was to busy and worried about leaving at a certain RPM. The green light was on for over a second and I went when I heard these guys yelling you going or what ? Thats enough for now, you guys will never believe me when I say I'm not a bad driver. ------------------

Um, I'll addFor some reason, I left my drivers window down. Did my burnout and staged. The track guys ran up and had me roll up the window. Must of all I had to do to throw off my opponent. Interesting I'd say? Les ------------------ http://www.geocities.com/wildfire1mustang/

Hmmmmmm. Something I did a few years ago....... Ran out of fuel! Of course I had been working on changing a transmission after developing a leak after some 300 passes. Why, I dont know, but the front pump gasket decided to split in 2. I couldnt come across a gasket anywhere, so I was in the mood to do some work anyway and I yanked the trans from the convertible and put it in my car. After all that work, and 1st round I get a known sandbagger. He had changed his dial from 11.20 to 11.50 and he had qualified with a 10.82 with his B/SA chebby. I figured Id play along and dialed up to 13.20 from a 12.80. This guy freaked and got busted changing his dial past the line to 11.80!!!!! He was rattled prretty good and I murdered him on the tree.. All was well until the sputtering started. I knew right away I forgot to make sure the tank had fuel in it!!!!!I dont have that problem anymore. Once in a while, I'll forget to shut off the 2-step and that will cause the motor to almost shut off. I hate that!!!!

Well if I must tell... My first time at the track I pulled around the waterbox and backed up to get straight... then proceeded to do my burnout. All was well until I let up on the brake and the car lunged backwards and yes of course my 2 buddies were standing right beside me needless to say I have not lived that one down in 10 years. My latest one... During the pass my car quit as I rolled past 1 turn off and up to the next one so I could pull off on the opposite side of the track. As I am putting the hot wire back on the coil the track guy shows up on his 4 wheeler and asks why I did not turn off while rolling down the track... I had no response just got in the car and headed back to the pits thinking what a dumb thing that was.------------------ Mike 66' Mustang,289,4 speed overdrive. 95' Lightning #2218 65' Mustang,Tubbed, Rear cage ladder bars / coil over's, 5.13:1 N-case 9in.31 spline, 302 toploader 4 speed.
