My C4 is starting to act up. After I drive a while, it seems to stutter when I move out from a stop. Sort of like manual transmission clutch chatter. Then it sort of slides into the 1-2 shift , instead of snapping the 1-2 shift like it normally does. Same thing 2-3 shift. I took it to a test and tune day today, and it shifted fine for the first 8 passes or so. Then it started the stutter thing. Trans temp gauge never went over 180. This started about a month ago. I have narrowed it down to only happening after I drive it for a while ( like on and off all day use) or if I harp on it for a while. If I just drive to work ( about 20 minutes) and it sits all day, and then drive home its fine. 2400 stall convertor, C4, in a 65 fastback, mild motor (e-brock heads, 270H cam, holley 650 , headers, 3.50 gears). Any ideas?

how long since you changed the filter. the 700-r4 in my suburban was doing the same thing. an old trans man told me to change the filter and it fixed it. his theory was that the filter was about stopped up and as i ran it, more stuff got in it. then as it set and cooled off, some of the stuff turned loose and fell back into the pan thus making it work ok till it got hot again. An update: Drained the fluid - looked very dark, almost black. Drained the converter. My drain plug has one of those magnetic prongs on it, and it was loaded up with stuff. About the look, color, and consistency of anti-seize compound - gray, smooth, almost like a clay. Dropped the pan, and it had like a fine silt in the bottom. Cleaned the screen, buttoned it up, reloaded with fresh fluid. Any ideas on whats up?

i think the silt is from the clutches, not always a bad thing. you get some from normal wear. did it work???------------------ mike r racing is real everything else is just a game. 81 capri-302-7.33 @92mph 1/8 1.54 60 ft. http://www.angelfire.com/ny5/billswebsite/pg06.html

Took it for a short spin. Everything seemed ok. Only a longer drive, and some harder driving will tell. I'll post results. Thanks.

The dark fluid is an indication that it has been burned. Your trans has been slipping the clutches, obviously, and has been overheated. The fact that you changed fluid may get you by for a little longer, but I'm guessing that you are looking at an overhaul soon. It would also be a good idea to put a trans cooler on it.------------------ Ben Grabber Green '70 Mach I 351C 4V Robbin Egg Blue '79 Fairmont 408C 4V, best time to date is 10.50 @ 125mph [This message has been edited by clevelandstyle (edited 05-30-2004).]

Well, the trans s**t the bed. No moevment at all now. My fault for not running a cooler. Looking at a rebuild or a buddy has a C4 from Performance Automatic that is 1 year old that he will sell me. Are they any good? Should I have the convertor looked at, because it definetly overheated the tranny?

Sorry to hear about your tranny. Saw a friend go through the same thing with his 350T behind a 3000 stall. That is one thing about running a high stall on the street that most people forget to mention. It's very hard on the tranny. A HD cooler will be definately help but tranny needs to be setup to accomodate the higher stall speeds. I'll keep my stick shift on the street thank you! ------------------ 1966 Mustang Coupe: Custom glass hood and BIG scoop sits atop a 289 stroked to 331 c.i., Steel crank, rods and girdle, TFS alum. heads, Stealth 8020 intake, Xtreme 268 Solid Roller, Holley 750 HP, long tubes, 4speed, 9" 3.50 posi. 11.86 @ 116 mph (7.62 @ 93 mph)daily driver!
