Ok, I've got a quick question. Can anyone tell me what the order is on a 302 for the lifters on the base circle? Just like in the tech pages article for a 351, but for a 302 cam at tdc, 180 and 270. It would be really damned helpful right now. Thanks

Noone? I've attempted the other methods and the damned nuts keep backing off, plus it takes forever to turn each cylinder until the valves are opening....any advice? Its a 79 351 with a 302 cam in it...

A 302 cam or a 5.0 cam? What year cam? The old 302 and all 351w's firing order are the same.

its a 302/289 cam. The book for my eb and the mustang book both have a different firing order between the 351/302. I was under the impression that the 351 and 5.0HO had different firing orders than the old 302's..?

Adjust the valves just like a 351w.

Ok, so I *thought* I had them adjusted, and it seemed to run well during the ~25 minute break-in. But then after letting it rest, it wouldn't start. Take the valve covers off and find both #1 cyl arms really lose and both #2. Also, both the 1exhaust and #2intake lifters apparently came out of their bores So now its back off with the intake manifold and see if I can figure this out again .

:edit: Is it possible to tighten another nut ontop of the rocker nut to hold it in place? This worries me as I really don't want to have to deal with it or think about it while driving the car...any suggestions?

Did the rockers move or did the lobe wipe out? Check the cam lift.

what an opportunity here to learn a lot. i cant imagine the thing running right then having all those problems after a shutdown. sounds like something major is wrong and will be easy to find. the rockers shouldnt lossen themselves if the correct hardware was used.

This sounds like exactly what happened to me. Mine wound up being a wiped out cam.

Man that's ugly... Ok my 2c.

I've seen two things.
Positive stop heads and wrong valve stem height.

If he has non adjustable heads (Rail Rocker)the nuts will losen back off. There are suppose to be tightened all the way down. If he attempts to put a soild cam in well it ain't gonna work. He did mention a 79 engine which would be a positive stop rocker.

Ok let's see what he posts next!
Les

Edit: Opps I've seen cool valve springs pull the "Pressed-in" rocker studs up out of the heads as well.
