someone told me on an older engine, such as mine, running one litre of ATF in the oil before an oil change cleans out all the crud out of the engine....now i'm game for anything, as long as it won't wreck my engine, so has anyone done this or have advice not to try such a foolish stunt or anything?

they also mentioned using diesel fuel as well

Diesel works.

p.s. Just be ready for the clogged oil passages from the loosened gunk.

I never try to "clean" the inside of an engine unless it's being overhauled. Once you start breaking stuff loose, it's going to flow through your engine. Nothing good can come of it. It's best, in my opinion, to just leave it alone.

is that not what the oil filter is for?

forgive my ignorance, but i don't see what good leaving gunk where it is would do for me

Any large pieces won't even make it to your filter. It will just get stuck in the passages.

guess i wasn't planning on any peices that size....

would it be a good idea to do anyway? better to have something blocking a passage in my garage, then when i'm cruising down the highway and a hunk of junk comes off and i loose oiling to some part of the engine

Some times the old build up comes off in large scales. And it can end up making things worst. The mahcine shop I used said to never try and clean a old motor unless on have it apart.
