It's a Holley 600vs no choke. It starts ok cold, but when I go to start it hot. If I pump it first it acts like it's flooded, and if I crank it I have to hit the gas at the same time the motor starts or it just keeps on cranking.

At cruise it runs ok, but at idle after it's warmed. It will jump or stumble at idle about a 200-300rpm jump down you can feel it.

It will start to idle down alittle too. If I rev it, then it's ok for a few seconds.

I can't find any vacuum leaks and I changed the PV which seemed to help alittle. If I cover the carb with my hand the motor dies right away.

I did notice the main throtle shaft is alittle wet on the choke side of the carb not dripping just alittle damp.

Could it be the float level, the fronts are just alittle above the bottom of the sight plug.

I never re adjusted the idle mixture screws after replacing the PV.

Sorry to make a story out of it, just trying to give all info I can.

My 2c says the advance is high and the engine has a heat soak problem. I'd say the fuel in the bowls is perk-u-lating thus flooding the engine. Ya may want to try a spacer of sorts and see if that helps.

A 160 thermostant may help but it depends on if your radiator is worthy of cooling.

Les

Opps; need to add.. the addition of Ethanol to our fuel causes rubber products to expand, thus fuel pump putting out more pressure due to streached diaphraqm.

Les, I have the vacuum advanced plugged, and I use a 1" four phenolic spacer now. The timing is at 12 at idle and 34 total in by 2500 rpm.

New rad, and water pump car runs at 175-180 all the time so far. But it's cool out right now highs in the low 70's.

If it cranks fine cold and then requires that you hold the accelerator pedal down to crank it after it sets hot, then you have some fuel leaking somewhere. Try lowering the float level and if that doesn't work, then it could be faulty or worn metering block gaskets. When they don't seal right, fuel can seap into the idle circuits and leak out under the butterflies of the adjacent metering block, causing it to flood and wash the cylinders. Standard cast bodies and metering blocks are very rough and have trouble sealing sometimes. It's always a good idea to replace the bowl and block gaskets as a set. They compress together to put equal pressure on all the surfaces.

Thanks Dan, the blue gaskets do look alittle worn.

I don't have to hold down the pedal to start it expect for one time.

I just have to try and start a few times. When it does start it runs like it's flooded.
And the idle bouncing when it's warm worries me more.

I played with my first old Holley for weeks trying to get it to run right. I finally put in new gaskets and had it running perfect in 10 minutes. I felt stupid for trying to save $10 and wasting all that time. From then on I always put new bowl and block gaskets in when I take one apart.

To locate these hidden fuel leaks you can take the carb off and look underneath the butterflies for any fuel seepage. Or you can let the engine idle for a minute to dry up any fuel, then shut it off without touching the throttle. Wait 10 minutes and then take a flashlight and look down the carb. If the area around the butterflies or shafts are wet with fuel then you can be sure that there is an internal fuel leak. A tight carb won't leak a drop.
If you notice any leaks then replace the gaskets, run it a few minutes, check float level, and then readjust the idle mixture screws for best rpm and see how it runs.

Scoop, can you try a Holley DP? A year ago I went to the RT66 Nationals and talked to the people at Holley...I told them my combo and max rpm they told me what to do to my duraspark dist. and told me to switch to a 600dp..after I made the changes my car came to life! I don't think I would ever go back to a vc carb again.

Thanks

I need another 4-5 weeks before I can buy a DP. I'll get there but for now. Alex gave me some things to try.

That one sounds like a good buy.
