This last wednesday at the drags during passes the car's steering lock-up as the rpms reached around 6000, and on the last pass the shift nob lock up as well. However, in low rpm street driving the steering is fine. Any info or ideas as to what the problem may be would be appriciated. Thanks.

Is this Sam or Spencer?
Either way Congratulations Spencer on his/your win in H.S. class last night!

Have you checked the p.s. belt and fluid yet? How do you know the steering is locking up when you're going straight? And, how does a shift knob lock up?

Steve,
first of all this is spencer, and thanks. we did check fluid and it was a little low, but we have not check the belts. the reason i knew the steering had locked was that the position in which it locked caused the car to drift towards the center line and when i try to correct it it wouldn't let me. then on the final run the steering locked up at about 5700 rpms in 2nd gear then hoping the wheel would break once i shifted into drive, i try to shift but the shifter wouldn't budge, nor would the button on the shifter push in. so i got off the gas, rpms came down, i was able to shift and the steering came back. i hope that explains it a little better. glen, of course knows and suggested we take it to the tire source to get it check out. thanks and any feedback is obviously helpful.

Check to see if you have broken motor mount, a header or exhaust pipe could be pushing up against the steering shaft, also would mess with the tranny linkage. Open the hood and have someone watch the engine while you powerbrake, shouldn't be much movement.

I asked sam to put the Mach up on jack stands I have a feeling that the trans mount may be bad. We will check the clearance around the steering box / headers around the linkage. Any ever experience too much pressure from a steering pump?
It's a good thing that Spencer had the guy by 2 tenths in the light, that allowed him to back off and shift. Way to go Spenc. What is it now 2 wins in your first 6 outings?

Glen,

You find anything yet?

I could see the p.s. pump cavitating at high rpms, but that wouldn't explain the shifter problem.

Hey guys Sam here,
I backed off the rpm's to 5k shift, no problems. Went ahead and changed belt[ glazed ] and added a spacer to align pulleys, per Tommy at "Tire Source". The engine is stock 351c, don't you think @5k we are near the max power/torque?

Still Looking for trans problem/solution if there is one other than tired C6...Thanks
