In order to run my 85 as a Superstocker I have to use the factory carburetor. I have read that these carbs were not made user friendly for racers and am wondering if anyone has tinkered with them.John

It's not that bad John. Actually, I`ve found the Holley 4180 that was used on the 83-85 5.0 Mustangs to have a few quirks. First off, there are no idle mixture screws in the primary metering block, unlike the 4150/4160 Holleys. Instead, there is an idle mixture screw for each barrel, however they are in the base plate, & are sealed to prevent "tampering".I drilled a small hole in the bottom of the base plate for each mixture screw, & then picked out the plug, which provides access to the mixture screws with a small Allen key (don`t recall the correct size at the moment). There is also no idle speed screw in the base plate, rather idle speed is set with the dashpot. The secondary metering plate is different than a 4160 in shape, so they don`t interchange. Luckily these 4180 smog carbs are worth very little to most people. I have picked up several of these carbs at swap meets for $20.00 or less,so the swap meets are a decent source of these carbs. Good luck.------------------ 78 Fairmont 428 4 speed 10.20@130mph 80 Fairmont 302 5 speed 12.8@105mph 85 Mustang NHRA M/Stock 302 5speed. hanks Rory, I bought one off of E-bay for $33. I will have to find some swap meets to go to so I can get more of them even cheaper. When the ebay one gets here I will start playing.John

I have one on my 5.0L Ranger, a swap meet cheapie... it runs great and much better than a normal Holley 600. I took all the choke stuff off mine and made a bracket so the idle speed screw has something to snub against.
