I saw it posted on another forum...1/2 cc too little of chamber volume??? That really stinks. Hopefully you'll get another chance at that record soon!------------------ Mark Walton '83 Mustang NHRA Stocker (under construction - track debut 2003...uh...'04) '69 "off brand" NHRA SS/EA [This message has been edited by TurboGT (edited 05-10-2004).]

Rory isn't a happy camper after this weekend, he ran quick enough to set the N/Stock record and back it up. He started pulling the head off right after Friday mornings second run. Teardown took a long time and they were pretty thorough. The tech man CC'd the chamber volume several times, removing the valves and cleaning any carbon but the number didn't come up. Could be plug heat range, temperature variation or something.

Yeah, I was 1/2 a cc shy of combustion chamber volume . I`m not certain yet, but I think that it may have been a spark plug mixup. My buddy that did the machine work thought that I`d be comfortably safe on cc`s when he did the heads, but we think that when he cc`d the heads, he may have used a Chevy spark plug, which appear a fair bit shorter in the steel shell than the 5.0 Fords. Frankly, neither of us even thought about it. Last year the car barely ran under the index in decent weather, hot weather meant the shoe polish wasn`t needed. After a busy winter, the car was almost 6 tenths under, so I thought that since the N/S record had been at minimum since last August, I figured, what the heck. I added 120 lbs to the car (I normally run in M/S), & decided to go after the N record. Since I have gone mid 12.5`s in M/S, I thought I could run under the 12.75 ET minimum without too much trouble. Which it did, despite weak 60 foot numbers. The first pass was a 12.691, the back up was a 12.733. The NHRA Tech guy sealed the engine after the first pass, after marking a few more pieces following the second pass, they said I was OK to tear down. Everything else checked out fine, but they said the head was a bit small, & allowed me to clean up any carbon before they re checked it. They cc`d it several times, including flipping the plate over in case of warpage, and even tried a new bottle of checking alcohol, but it time it came up 67 cc`s, instead of the minimum 67.5 cc`s. Needless to say, I wasn`t a happy camper, but I have to accept my DQ, as the head did come up a tad small. I was informed that I will be sent a letter from NHRA concerning this, & I imagine that I may need to show up at the next NHRA Disional or nat`l open with the heads off for inspection. I supose I`ll find out my fate fairly soon. Since I was going for a record, & was fully aware that a tear down would result, obviously I honestly believed that everything was legit, as did my machinest buddy, who was probably more upset than I was. If the N record is still up for grabs, I fully intent to go after it again, when the opprotunity allows. (I need to redeem myself!!) Thanks for your interest. It's a real bummer on the DQ Rory. You shouldn't hang your head at all however. I remember how hard you worked on that car before it's first race when I met you at Mission. I think you had been awake for the previous 72 hours or something! And now in just a short time you ran under a NHRA national record time? I think it is amazing to say the least. I plan on being in Seattle for the national event and hope to see you set the record there. Have you run your Fairmont this year yet?
