Does anyone know what the most you should go with starter shims? I rebalanced my flywheel to 50oz(engine is a 1983 302) and rebuilt my c-4 trans, when cranking the engine around to tighten the converter bolts the engine stopped when the added weight hit the starter bendex...so I bought a Big End mini Starter...Now the starter makes a grinding noise when the engine startes so I put in a .100 shim and it makes just a little noise now..So my Question is how much more shims should I put in before it's too much?

John,

Can you remove some material from the starter where it's hitting the weight? When you shim it you're reducing the engagement of the starter's gear. I'd rather grind a little off the starter.

Steve, I tryed that first I grouned the housing to give more space but that wasen't it...The added weight hits the bendex when it's all the way out in the crank mode and hits the big round sholder of the bendex not the gear it self. This is on a MustangII with the small MustangII bellhousing the flywheel is really small and the machine shop couldn't spread out the weight too far and still keep it in balance.

Then shim it out and check the engagement with a flashlight while you hit the remote starter button. That'll tell the story.

2 different bellhousings 157 and 168. If I'm not mistaken you may need the larger bellhousing?

I have seen starter shims at Autozone and Advance Auto (I think Checker is part of Advance). Also, starter shims cam with the Tilton starter years ago, so you might check Summit or Jegs.
