Car is getting to the final things and need fuel system advice.

Street/strip driven, new 420 stroker. Need advice from tank to carb. Sump? Electric pump/brand-flowrate? Deadhead or return regulator? Line size?

Thanks,
don

MMM 420 stroker
I'm about to install 1/2" aluminum fuel line on mine, running from a holley blue pump up to a mallory regulator, non return style. Sounds like idealy you want a return style.

Do you think 1/2 is necessary? Seems like most of the pump/regulators take 3/8 npt in/out. If I understand the glossy print a return set-up keeps the fuel pump running cooler, where does the regulator go, back near the pump or up front near the engine?

Assuming I go return setup can you use the stock 5/16 line as the return and plumb a new 3/8 to filter-pump-regulator-carb?

thanks,
don

Don,

I run a 3/8 s/s line w/o a regulator w/ a little Holley red in the back feeding a mechanical pump in the front. Seems to feed the 408w fine. I have no idea what the fuel pressure is, and I don't really care.

Great link, explains a lot. However looking through the summit catalog it looks like you have to buy a mongo fuel pump 250gph+ pump and big $ regulator to get above a 3/8's fittings.

I think I'm going with the Mallory 140 pump/regulator and the fram canister fuel filter. Probably will go 3/8 to and return line.

Was just checking out the log setup from the holley blue thread, big $'s for that setup.

thanks,
don

Steve if that works for you thats should work for me. What mechanical pump do you have? Did you go 3/8 from your tank to the holley pump?

Ignore that question I recall you have a fuel cell so I'm assuming so. Not sure I'll be in such good shape coming from the stock tank in the stock pickup, but that should be not to hard to fix too.

thanks,
don

No Don,

The '66 just has a stock tank with a 3/8" sending unit/pickup tube. The car ran 125 mph in the 1/4 with the holley red feeding a stock mechanical pump up front. Now it's a aftermarket mechanical pump up front around 100 gph. (bought it used) LOL

If I were to do it again from scratch I'd run a bigger electric and 3/8 line w/o the mechanical up front. I really think you'll be fine with 3/8" s/s tubing. S/S is thinner walled so its I.D. is a little larger than 3/8 steel or aluminum. Forget the fancy fuel system unless your running N2O or blowers or atart running 10 flat or quicker. FWIW, I know everone goes overkill on the fuel system, and that it doesn't hurt.

I do chuckle when I see all these rear sumped 1/2 line fuel systems w/ return regulators and fuel logs that run 11's at the track. It's a joke and they spent way too much for no gain.
