would it be best if i went with a mini starter when i put the hooker comp headers on? or will the old one stand up to the added heat (or would there be less heat with the ceramic coated headers over the stock manifolds)? and/or should i get one to give some more clearance, and so i don't drop the heavy one on my head anymore

Ditto to what scoop said.

It goes in much easier, if the old starter goes out you can plan on removing headers to change the starter. The mini will come out and go back in without loosening headers.

When we put my motor/tranny in today my starter was pressed against one the header tubes so I'll be ordering the mini tomorrow. Figure mine is 36 years old anyhow.

any suggestions as to what the best mini starter would be, or which to steer away from

If you want to go with a stock style mini-starter you can get one for a later Fox Mustang. Another application that I have used and can verify works is a starter from a 92 F-150 with a 302/AOD.

The stock style are nice, but I prefer to spend just a little more and get aftermarket starter. I have had this type starter from both Powermaster and CVR. Really like them. Strong and no problems. They also have a nose piece that let's you put the starter in about 8-9 different positions for the most header and steering clearance.

You can get the aftermarket type for about $160 from Jegs or Summit.

CVR makes one for about $150.00 the neat thing is it has a life time guarantee. EVEN on a race car. Wow that's rare.

My brother uses one of these on his 12-1 408 and has no problems with it.
Since the stater is not centered anymore in the tranny hole it is probably the most compact starter out there and will clear everything you can think of.

I also run a factory mini starter on my racecar. It is probably 8 years old, and has never failed me and still spins my motor over with ease. The reason I went with the factory unit instead of any of the aftermarket starters is, they wouldn't fit my old car. No matter which way I turned them, they wouldn't clear everything under the car. The factory mini starter cleared though.
And considering it started my old roller-cammed 13.8-1 cleveland without problems, I doubt I will ever buy an aftermarket starter.
