Ok, this year is the year I get the 351C rebuilt! Been holding off due
to shakey situation at work (many layoffs), but now it's time to pull the
trigger.

Background, 1971 "Mock" 1

351 Cleveland Engine - '72 Block, '70 Quench Heads, 10.7 to 1 Compression
750 cfm Holley 4 Barrel, Vacumn Secondaries
Stock Intake Manifold
Ford Motorsport Cam - 292/302 duration, 510"/536" lift
MSD Ignition, Distributor
Hooker Headers, Flowmaster 3 Chamber mufflers
Tremec TKO 5 speed with Strange 4.30 Detriot Locker

Plan is to build 408 stroker al la 7Dmach1.

I've started discussions with L&M, galziers will pull the engine and
do the engine bay clean up and re-install. Unless I find a short block
in the meantine.

Target is 500Hp on engine dyno, looks like stroker kit, roller rockers,
solid roller cam, etc etc....

I'm thinking of having the current 2 bolt block drilled for 4 bolt mains
if I don't find another block, just as a bit of extra insurance, though
I've heard from some that it's not necessary.

7Dmach1, I noticed that you needed to go with a different hood for
clearence, what caused that? intake?

I think it would be really cool to take the 71-73 ram air hood and raise
the center section that is already raised and make the air intakes
a little larger. Of course, if that is needed then we'll probably
do it to one of the new OEM hoods since the one I have now is an
original NOS hood.

In the words of George Costanza, I'm back Baby!!!

Hi,
Here is a link to Dark Horse Racing. If you go to the fiberglass link on his page they have a modified hood kind of what your talking about.

http://www.darkhorseracing.net/

Brion is really cool and pretty open on talking engine. Drop him an e-mail!

Hope this helps,
Les

If I can get that number under the hood so can you. I have a 408c and it makes 400 RWHP through an AOD and a 9 inch so that is approx 500 FWHP.

Here is my setup:
4 bolt 351c bored to .03 over (originally a 2 bolt block but I had it tapped and line honed to use my 4 bolt caps from my first motor)
Ross racing stroker pistons making a measured +- 10.6:1 compression
4v open chamber heads with 2.19/1.71 stainless valves w/ 3 angle valve job
POlished combustion chambers and ported exhaust side
Screw in studs, 1.73 Crane gold roller rockers
New Custom (Ed curtis speced) Flat Tappet Hydro cam
Xcelerator intake
Holley 850 DP
Holley 5/16 spacer
3 x 14 filter and xtreme air lid
Milodin oil pump, pickup, windage tray and 9 quart pan
Weiand Aluminum High flow water pump
No PS, No PB
Underdrive single ?V? groove crank pulley, water pump pulley and alt pulley
Mechanical Fuel Pump, 3/8 fuel lines
Cloyes Double Roller Timing
MSD Billet Aluminum Small Diameter Distributer
MSD Blaster III coil
MSD High Capacity Wires
MSD 6a box
Spal 16inch electric fan
long tube headers
3 inch x pipe into 3 inch 2 chamber flowmaster then stepped down to 2.5 inch and mandrel bent over the rear axle.

7D's motor is real nice but those Jensels are pricey and I didn't want to deal with solids for my street bruiser 65. I am quite happy with my results al-beit a little lower on the power than 7Ds...I have a much lighter car

Yea, kind of like the dark horse one, but I would to see the
whole raised area in the stock hood brought up, including the openings
in the front. I've got clearance problems now, when I added the MSD
distributer it didn't clear the air filter (without notching the
filter tray bottom). I had to go to a smaller diameter filter and
so I wanted to go to a taller one, don't remember exactly what I ended
up with, but I remember putting a cheetos cheese ball on top and slowly
closing the hood to check clearance. I havn't seen any marks from the engine
moving side to side, so it looks ok but it's very close. I could try one of
those air filter covers that allows flow through the top, but it would be
close to the hood that it might not allow much flow.

With the hood parts for the ram air setup being reproduced, maybe I should
go with a ram air setup. That would require some type of custom air cleaner
to match up to the hood (esp if the hood is not stock).

Not needed nor worth the effort and money it would require to do it. 2 bolt mains are just as strong as the factory 4 bolt mains. Those 2 puny little bolts aren't going to add enough strength to warrant the cost, especially with your projected power goal. And, all I have ever run are 2 bolt main blocks, and I have yet to have a problem with the caps moving, or failing. And my best guess is, my last motor was making somewhere around 600 hp at the flywheel.

OK, so it sounds like any 351c block will
do as long as its standard bore or is .030
over and does not need re-boring (i.e .030
is the limit).

Are for heads, the 70-71 4bbl quench heads
(closed chamber) are the ones to get.
The casting will be D0AE. Correct?

I agree with Kid. I just built a 408C this winter using a 2 bolt block. ARP main studs and good machining is all I did. It's gonna see a lot of track time and I'm thinking I will be quite a bit higher than 500HP.
