A friend of mine donated a 9" rear to my cause. It's been sitting in his dads yard for several years and the axels seem to be very content not to be extracted from the housing. I've loosened the 3rd member, heated the outside of the housing at the bearing with a small torch, beat on em with a bfh and they aren't budging. Any tips appreciated?

thanks,
don

Don,

Rent a slide hammer type axle puller.

You can try the drum on the wheel studs backwards and use the drum as a slide hammer, but if the rear is loose on the ground you'll just get a little exercise and the axles will still be where they were before you started.

It's loose on the ground. I tried swearing a lot at it and that didn't work either. Although combined with the bfh beating I felt a little better.

Time to get more physical it sounds. Got a chain and a big truck.

Re-install the brake drums inverted. (backwards)
Also install the lug nuts backwards so the flat is against the drums.
You can then bang on the drums around their perimeter to drive the axles out.

If you have a harmonic balancer puller put the puller behind the axle flange then screw the puller stud through the hole in the axle threaded into the puller.Crank away a little then rotate the axle and puller 90 degrees and crank somemore. It works like a charm without all that banging and pulling your arms out of their socket.
