I tore down my motor last weekend to get ready to put on my AFR heads and install the new cam. Everything inside of the motor looks great!!! At least to the naked eye. So when I ordered the parts I decided to get a new FMS timing chain. It is a true roller with a steel cam gear. The chain I had in the motor was a Summit Racing $40 double roller chain (pretty sure it's not a true roller though). The thing is the chain looks like new. No slop at all. So I'm wondering if I'm doing myself any favor by changing it, or if I'm just making my wallet lighter. The Summit chain like I said is not a true roller and has a cast iron cam gear. with the much bigger cam and the higher RPM I'm going to be turning I'm not sure if the Summit chain will be up to the task or not??? What do you all think? Anyone have any experience with the Summit chains?

TIA,
B-loose

you can never go wrong changing a timing chain, oil pump, or front pump seal in an automatic!!! my theory on those parts is, if i can see it i change it!!

If the chain is still tight after run in, I see no reason to replace it.

This is a great question. How tight is tight enough?

1/16" deflecton ?
1/8" deflection ?
1/4" deflection ?
