im thinking off taking my ignition to the next level, i'm currenlty using a Mallory Unilite 47 series with the electronic Mallory coil no:29216. i was thinking of a ignition box, either from MSD (MSD6A??) or to stay with Mallory and go with a Hyfire (III,IV,CD/IS??) and then top it off with a promaster coil??? i'm a little lost in the woods of ignition land and not knowing what to deciede on...maybe some of you have experience with a brand or type of box... the car sees street-action and maybe some strip..306, Windsorjr heads, 9.5 to 1 comp, 600cfm Holley, weiand stealth, 2800rpm stall conv, 3.55 reargears greetz Ben

if i were going with the msd (which i would) i would get the 6al because it has a place for rev limiter chips. (comes with a supply) i also have had good luck with the hifire IV. it has little switches so that you can preset the low and high rpm. however, i dont really think that you will notice significent power gains with either over what you got now. to me a spark is a spark is a spark. if it is lighting the fire, then it is working ok. just my opinion, i could be wrong. good luck ------------------ mike r racing is real everything else is just a game. 81 capri-7.33 @92mph 1/8 1.54 60 ft. http://www.angelfire.com/ny5/billswebsite/pg06.html

Well, im asking this coz, a friend of mine with a 466 bbf has good result with a MSD Distributor and MSD6A box with the standard coil...i was looking into upgrading my ingnition setup as well. I think there might be a couple of hp to be won. If i install a ign-box (MSD/Mall.) and another coil, i can upgrade the complete system up to 12V instead of the 9V it's running on now, and with more V ,means more spark, so i can raise the gap of the plugs?? meaning a greater/powerful spark?? i think i'm close to the truth but as said before, im lost in Ingitionland, so if anyone knows??? greetz Ben

I have the original Hyfire box and have never had a problem with it. I can't remember exactly when I bought it but I think it was in the early 90s so about 10 years ago. I have the Mallory Comp 9000 distributor. I'll be selling the distributor soon because I bought another Mallory unit that is compatible with my new fuel injection system. It will probably be a couple of months before I get it all put together.

DO NOT USE A Mallory UNILTE! Mine went out on me tonight on the last pass. The LED module. They are 75 bucks for a replacement. why do I run it instead of my MSD sitting on the shelf. It won't clear the tunnel ram. If you have room DONT RUN A UNILITE! I've had a few buddies burn up the LED module on unilite before also. Now I have to find one BEFORE Wednesday when we leave for Nashville. Run all MSD if you can, I would if MSD made a small base Dizzy for a 460

That's not good news!!!! i have my Unilite for 3 years now and no foul ups so far... but if it goes the next thing will be a MSD ,from what i heard is that the unilite doesn't cope well with voltagepeaks.... maybe thats it what caused it blowing up????

They do make a small cap dizzy for them, but it's a pro billet. Will it fit? You could lock it out and use with your crank trigger. It's part number 8577 in MSD's book.
I've seen too many of Mallory unilites fail for me to EVER buy one for anything. Just like any HEI based dizzy, they have no place on a racecar IMHO.

I've talked to three different Techs at MSD they don't have anything that will fit. the mallory barely fits. I wish. The only other thing is an offset dist. big bucks.

Why wont the small cap MSD fit? I know I've seen other guys with tunnelrams using it. But maybe they had a different style than yours. What intake do you have? If you would like, I'll ask Animal if he has any ideas of what would work.

I'm open to anything. I researched this issue with MSD techs and even Mallory, hoping they made a magnetic drop in conversion for the unilite. I got nowhere. The MSD tech finally gave me the number of a guy who made offset distributors for them. If I grind on the tunnel ram I might get the small cap MSD to fit, maybe. The guys on the 385 forum have gone through this too. There is a long thred over there that is probably 4-5 months old on clearing the tunnel ram.

That doesn't too promising. I'll check with him anyways. Maybe you need to break out the TIG and make your own sheetmetal intake.
