Daniel (BornInAFord) had a few that he mailed and emailed out. Thanks by the way incase I forgot! I was planning on doing this for a winter project but it has come and gone and I havent even bought all the parts yet. He emailed me some articles I could probably manage to send them out to you.

Soak new clutches and steels in gear oil for 24 hours before installing. Do NOT install the clutches dry!

Clean out the third member with gasoline. (or something else that will remove all that thick grease) This will allow you to get a good backlash reading.

Use a dial indicator to check the back lash BEFORE taking it apart.

Remove the caps, then take out the differential and ring gear assembly.

Remove the ring gear.

Remove screw holding trac-loc unit together.

Take trac-loc unit apart, being careful to keep track of everything, and take a picture or make a diagram of how everything goes, so it will be easy to put back together. It's not that hard, but can save a bit of frustration.

Install new clutches.

Put the two halves of the unit back together and clamp it.

Install screw.

Install ring gear.

Install back into the 3rd member to the same backlash setting it had before.

You're done!

It's not very difficult.... just a matter of doing it.

Good Luck!

Good instructions Mike,

Ms68Ms,
Don't forgot to preload the carrier bearings. And if you want to rebuild the rest of it, it's a little more involved.

Thanks for the good info. The thing I'm confused about is if there is a difference in carriers between a trac-loc or an open diff.I guess what I'm asking is If my diff is an open will putting new clutches in it make it a posi. The carrier was built by a friend of my dads a while ago and supposedly did some thing to make it a posi. but It acts like a posi sometimes meaning it leaves two strips and other times its a peg legger.I even tried putting the car on stands and spinning the rear wheels by hand. sometimes they will spin in opposite directions and sometimes they will spin in the same directionCan you guys clear this up for me.I'm not afraid to jump into this but I just need some clarification.

You can't install clutches in an open rear. If it is not a trac-loc, trac-loc clutches cannot be installed in it.

You can tell the difference by looking at the bolts that hold the ring gear on. Trac loc bolts are a little longer, but have smaller 5/8" heads. The 'open' carrier ring gear bolts have much larger 3/4" heads.

So, if the ring gear bolts take a 5/8" socket, you've got a trac-loc. If they take a 3/4" socket, you've got an open carrier.

Some will put extra preload on the spider gears to try and get some 'posi action' out of an open rear end. This works to an extent, and might be what was done with yours.

Good Luck!

Thanks Mike,It looks like I have an open carrier.I think I'm gonna say the hell with it and get a 31 spline Detroit locker and some aftermarket axles. I'm tired of messing around.
