I bought some gears for my cleveland but i was told that you cant use the fuel pump eccentric on some gears, then again this person is running a windsor. Is it the same for a cleveland? Also, whats the best way to install the gear on the cam, I mean the right way, because although hammering it in seems like the right way, most of the time it isnt

Not sure on the eccentric deal, sorry If the tolerance is that snug, try heating the gear in boiling water for 10 minutes or so. WEAR GLOVES, but the heat should expand it to facilitate a more gentle install ------------------ 1965 GT coupe, 333ci aluminum headed/solid cammed stroker, four speed, 3.70:1 9" All Blue Oval, no blue bottle http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/V8Thumper.html

I've never heard that. Nor have I run into any issues with any of the brands of gears I have run.
What brand is it you bought? [This message has been edited by kid vishus (edited 03-23-2004).]

Considering gear drives eat hp, and are not good on valve-train life, I haven't run one, nor will I ever.
I guess it's possible with them, but I really don't know.

May I ask why a Gear drive other than they sound like a blower. You are transfering harmonics you cant hear what the valve train is telling you and the suck up the horsepower. My .02 says get a double roller timing chain and then you have no issues, period. bruce

Dump the gears on E-bay. I seen a crank destroyed at the keyway due to harmonics.Save yourself an engine and get rid of 'em! Les ------------------ http://www.geocities.com/wildfire1mustang/

Very true wildfire, that happened to me and I was using a Pete jackson gear drive. The gear drive didn't damage the crank, but it broke the key. Although, if I had run it longer it would have.

I ran a Pete Jackson on my 289 with a mechanical pump. Needed to use the grinder a bit inside the front cover, and I think I trimmed the eccentric a bit also. In short, yes you can run a gear drive with a mechanical fuel pump. Paul

If your gears are good for the double roller set you can get another chain for it.Bruce

aldo, if they have enough slack to even worry about it, i would change the set. they are to cheap to take the chance of a failure. anytime i can see an oil pump, trans front pump seal, or timing chain set, i change it. i learned the hard way!!
