Hi guys;
I've wondered this for awhile. How would a 427W's performance compare to a 427 FE? Would there be a significant difference? Which has more potential?

It all depends what you want. 427 FE stuff is quite pricey, but 390`s & 428`s are not that bad. I spent less than $5000. total in 1984 when I built the 428FE in my Fairmont (stock non CJ block, crank, & rods,Speed Pro pistons, 428 CJ iron heads, Ford "Sidewinder" dual plane intake, 780 vac. sec. Holley, moderate solid cam). The car weighs 3100 lbs, & has gone low 10`s at over 130 mph in the 1/4 mile, shifting at 6200 rpm. I really doubt you could build a comparable HP 351W based engine for anywhere near than price. Likely need a roller cam, aftermarket heads, rods, & possibly a stroker kit to do it, & that costs $$$$.

80 Fairmont 302 5 speed 12.8@105mph

The FE has a larger bore and shorter stroke (4.23" bore by 3.78" stroke).
A Windsor 427 usually has a very long stroke (greater than 4.1") which
means very piston speed which limits maximum RPM and a smaller bore
which limits the size of the valves and the flow of the cylinder heads.
The FE also has a taller deck height which allows a longer stroke and/or
rod length and greater cubic inch potential. A 4.25" stroke 427 side
oiler with 0.030" overbore displaces 486 cubes and with aftermarket blocks
and SCAT 4.25" strokes, there are 500+ cube FE's out there now. Craft
gets 380 CFM out of their Edelbrock CNC FE heads and promises considerably
more out of the Blue Thunder FE race heads currently under development.
427 FE's also have cross-bolted main blocks that have raced successfully
in all sorts of competition from drags to LeMans to super-speedways.

Well 427 to 427 I like the small block approach. The 427FE heads are getting better but the Edelbrock heads are junk. My 418 will spank *most* 427's. Mine produces a REAL 622HP (measured on a Superflow, not a dream). It makes all the power by 6400RPM just like a big block. It's 10.5:1 pump gas too. How? The heads.

The head designers have been focusing on the 302/351 market leaving the FE heads in the dust. I couldn't make it without that kind of head.

Now, if you have some major $$$ someone like Keith Craft can build you a stompin' 427. When I was at his shop I saw 690-750HP FE's lined up ready for shipment. He can work some magic on the Shelby heads and some others (don't recall). Total cost? Well the 427FE with all the cool stuff will cost a tad bit more.

And hey, no one can PROVE that you have more than 351 cubes when you open your hood -- and you won't have clearance problems!
