Today at the local pick n' pull my dad decided he was dead set on pullin' this 8.8 rear out of an 85 Lincoln Continental. It's a disc brake rear w/ 3.08 locker. Does anyone know the length of this rearend compared to a 65-66? Is it the same rearend thats in the Explorer? If you can give me some insight on this rear end and whether or not its swappable that'd be great. Also, what do these rear ends run, price wise? Thanks! Luke EDIT: May of been a Mark VII, though I was pretty sure it was a Continental, I remember seeing the place where the emblems on the side used to be. Thanks Again! One more edit: Tag on it reads: WFC BM 4C23 3L08 75 s4060[This message has been edited by Mooney (edited 03-19-2004).] [This message has been edited by Mooney (edited 03-19-2004).]

It's a couple inches too wide, parts are already becoming obsolete. The Explorer is common enough that it wouldn't make sense to use the Lincoln rear.

By the way, according to that tag it's a 7.5".

-Using MARK VII/CONTINENTAL Rear Disc On A 8"/9" FORD Rear-.If the car was a two door, it was a MARK VII. A four door, a CONTINENTAL. You don't want a 8.8" rear if you already have a 8"/9". [This message has been edited by KULTULZ (edited 03-20-2004).]

I would swap an 8" out for an 8.8 in a heartbeat regardless of gear ratio, or what brakes it had. An 8.8 is lighter, and is more efficient than either an 8" or a 9".

I noticed that the tag said 75 and thought that might be the for 7.5. But a 5 lug rear disc 7.5 with a posi just didn't make sense to me. And it just seemed like such a beast of a rear to be the 7.5.

I wouldn't have one of the things if you gave it to me. I couldn't even afford to keep axles in one...

The 7.5" and 8.8" are very similiar in appearance. The center section of the 8.8" is a little larger of course and once you get used to them are not difficult to distinguish from one another. The 7.5" Rear Cover And Gasket; The 8.8" Rear Cover And Gasket; The 8.8" wasn't put into MUSTANGS and MARKS until the 86 production year. Man, the rear cover on the one I've got looks a helluva lot like that 8.8.. Just gotta go check it out I guess. How well would the 7.5 hold up? It was behind a 302 in the Continental.

Geez, i'm thinking of getting rid of the 9" in my other Fairlane and swapping in an 8.8" , lighter ,stronger and cheaper.Using C clips is not a safety issue with disc brakes , the calipers keep the axles in. The bearings riding on the shaft is the only deficiency in my opinion and i doubt the car will ever see 20,000 miles in my ownership, Explorer axles are readily available. They may be lighter and cheaper, but the stronger part of the equation raises serious doubts. If the c-clip axle has a violent failure, do you actually believe the brake mounting bracket is going to contain all that force? If you are serious about a 8.8" (and I can understand this from a cost viewpoint-but not to change out a 9" for a 8.8"), you need to have 9" axle ends welded on or install C-Clip Eliminators at the least. Just my opinion gentlemen, everyone has one. Your mileage may vary...
