Having posted before on my current FMX, and alternative options, I had decided to stick out the FMX. But someone suggested AODs and I have been looking into that for the past few months. Then I stumbled upon the AOD-E/4R70W's. These look like an excellent alternative as they are built stronger from the factory and (the big bonus) they are completely electronically controlled. Now this does sound intimidating at first, but then again it eliminates the pesky TV cable. Has anyone installed a AOD-E in their vintage stang? With everthing available through Baumman Engineering I don't think it would be that hard of a swap, no harder than a regular AOD at least. Any input/suggestions on these trannies??Paul ------------------ 1970 Grande H code 351W FMX

Simply for the overdrive. I plan on doing a bunch of highway driving in this car, and overdrive would make things alot better. If it weren't for that, you're right, it'd be C4 all the way, end of story. This car is now basically my primary car in the summers and driving to work 30 miles on the highway everyday could take its toll I'm thinking (especially on my pockets ). I don't run the AOD-E but I do run an AOD in my '68 Fairlane. The TV cable is no problenm at all. I ran a Lokar and even though a bit pricey it greatly eased the installation. I liked the idea of the AOD-E for the fact it is electronic. With a custom computer from Bauman it would have been a slick setup. For me though the price got to be too much. The computers are not cheap. The big advantage of the AOD is I can run a 4.62 gear and drive the freeway no problem. The only thing I wonder is if I would have run a 3.73 and a C4 if my 1/4 mile times would have been the same or better. In addition with an AOD everything cost more, the converter, the shift kit, and the trans itself. Yes I can run a lower gear but I think the AOD's suck more horse power and weight more than the C4's so the advantage may be negligable. I think if I change to anything though it will be a 5sp manual. HTH, B-loose

Its not that hard to do and is a quite a cool mod. I went with an AOD case that has the 4r70w internals for my car but here is a very good write up on installing the conputer controlled version in a classic stang.http://home.earthlink.net/~1_65pony/od.htm ------------------ Nick 65FB 408c AOD D.T. Wow that is quite a detailed page, thanks for the link. I am still trying to decide which route I'm going to go, I'll guess I'll just have to wait and see what ends up taking course. Paul ------------------ 1970 Grande H code 351W FMX
