Question, guys. I have a 66 mustang with a spooled 8 inch rear (i didnt do it). In the garage is a 9 inch from a 72 mustang 351C car. Won't this rear end just bolt in? Or is it too wide? I believe the axle tubes are the same size so that shouldnt be a problem. Also, is there a difference in u-joint sizes?

Later rear end housing is 4 inches wider.
48 vs 52
It will bolt in but you will lose some tire clearance.
The axle tube ends are thicker on the late 9 inch also.
They make conversion u-joints.

would it just be easier to put a new center in the 8 inch, or is it weak enough to be questionable?

The 72 rear end fits the 66 spring pads but the rear end is 4in. wider. Also the axle tubes on the 72 are larger in diameter where the u bolts go. If you have someone in your area to shorten the 72 rear to 66 width, you can use the 66 axles assuming you are sticking with 28 spline. Then you will need new u bolts and slot the original 66 shock brackets and then it will fit properly. You will also notice you will less clearance between the top of the axle housing to the frame. If car ride at a decent hight and is not lowered you should have no problems. U joints will be different but if you use the yoke from an early 9" pickup rear you will not need to shorten the drive shaft and there is a u joint that works with this modification.

Mosier/Strange case, spool, and good axles would make a nearly unbreakable 8 inch.

I'm sort of on a budget. What's the best way to go? Will a later 8 inch case handle 500 horsepower? I wish I could just find a used 9 inch housing of the right width!

Very timely post as I sort of have the same problem. I acquired for the right price (aka free) a 9 inch from something. There are no tags, the guy I got it from said it came from a 72 or 73 Mustang but who knows. I want to get it shortened to fit my 66 Conv project. I have completely disassembled the housing and it measures 55 7/8" from flange to flange (bare housing flanges). The spring perches measure 43" center to center. It appears the spring perches are correct for a 66 but it is too wide. What overall dimension should it be shortened to to go under the 66.
