Hi everybody ! After checking compression,on my 289(which came out at 130 across the board),I pulled the heads and intake,(the motor doesn't smoke, and is very quiet by the way).I noticed that the pistons have more than .020" side play.Should I rebuild or can I just throw A cam in it for now ? It's a weekend ,once in awhile cruiser, with a good beating everytime I go out.I figure I'm looking into the crystal ball here.By the way, I noticed it was already overbored by .030".Once again I'm just looking for opinion's.The cylinder's look good , still a cross hatch also. thank's ,"The Red One"

That is about .010 piston to wall clearance, abiet very unscientific method of measurment. Can you see a number on the top of the piston? If it is a forged piston chances are you are OK.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,& '04 First SS/MA in the TENS! Hey Moneymaker, thanks for the reply. The pistons have a 30 on top. Also, they look like cast flat-tops.I just want to have some fun, maybe a set of gears for now and a small cam .Also thinking of opening up the ports a little. All Red

Keep in mind, if you are measuring the side play at the top of the piston, it will read big. (the head of the piston is slightly smaller than the middle where the clearances are generally measured from)The feeler gauge should be inserted down the top or bottom of the cylinder (toward the lifter valley or freeze plugs) when measuring piston/wall clearance. Having rings on the pistons might make this difficult. If I were you, I'd just look for a ridge in the block where the rings come up to. If there isn't much of a ridge there, I wouldn't worry about it.
