How far out can you safely bore a 351w. Mine was already 30 over.

The shop said all looked good, but they wanted me to know that the block was already 30 over they could take it to 40 over at max. I told them I remember someone saying that they could go to 60, this was the look on his face .
They said it also needed the line touched up. Other wise it's good to go.

I'll know more on Monday ot Tuesday when Tony gets back in town. I talked to the machinst he told me the block looked good and they would bore it,but to wait and talk to Tony about the rest.

On the Combo still not sure.It depends on money Steve. I'm leaning towards a 351w with RPM 2.02 heads and a 270H cam. But you only live once so who knows.

Ron, keep on sharing. People like myself like to read threads like this, because we aren't experts on motors. Therefore we need to see questions and answers like this. I'm like you, I am getting ready to do some more work on my 351W and I'm very nervous about something not working out right. THAT'S WHY I READ ALL THESE THREADS, EVEN IF THEY ARE REPEATS. Keep us posted on your motor.

So far I know the block is going to be 40 over and needs to be align-honed. the deck was good. Still waiting to hear about the crank and rods. So it looks like I'm going with a 351w with forged flat top 10-1 pistons a girly man 270h cam and 2.02 RPM heads. The good news if the crank and rods check out good. I'll be right at or a little under budget for my low dollar rebuild.

I talked to the builder today, he said all looks good on the crank and rods. The crank was already 10 under so he'll take it to 20 and reuse the rods too. Do they have to do anything to get the rods to fit the new crank size or do the barings take up the slack ?

He said he'll use APR bolts for the rods and mains, is there anything I should ask for ?

He'll give me a total price in a few days. It should only be another 3-4 weeks before it's all done.

He going togo with SRP(I think thats the name he said)10-1 flat top forged pistons rather then TRW ?

It's nice worked with such and easy going guy. He's really been trying to save me money and build the best motor he can for me.

The rods will take up the difference.

Along with the new rod bolts the big end of the rods needs to be resized, but any machinist knows that.

You're getting the reciprocating assembly balanced, right?

I think they are made by JE pistons. They should be ok. I am glad you're going forged.

Steve I'm glad you don't make fun of my typing. At least I had all the letters there that time.

Balanced, thats something I have not talked to him about yet. Thanks I'll give him a call. Poor guy he's going to happy get my motor out of his shop.

Are the JE pistons rated, good, better or best ?

Thanks Steve I called him and asked him if he was going to balance it too. He laughed and said "of course nothing leaves here without it. Don't worry It'll all be including with the price" and he'll call me and go over every detail. It's real hard to be a half wit when your dealing with a pro.

I like that! He sounds like he runs a good shop. A lot of guys would have told you that you didn't really need balancing for the street.

I think JE/SRP are about middle of the road, just like TRW/Sealed Power.

With 10 to 1 and stronger rod bolts why not go larger with the cam with more lift and some more duration? There is a 280H on here.

I'm going with the 270h for now. Once I know for sure how much the motor will cost. I might go ahead and upgrade my convertor and rear gears if I have enough money. In that case I'll also go with alittle more cam. If not I'll use the 270h for now, until I can upgrade the other stuff. I might not be able to get to the gears and convertor for another year or more. It's all about money

JE are among the best you can buy. JE also makes SRP. SRP are still top notch pistons, just a tad below the JE line. Great pistons.

Good Luck!
