I am setting up my Twisted Wedge heads on my 351W for use with a solid street roller cam (XE274R). I could use some suggestions on what the best roller rockers would be for my application. Valve spring seat pressure will be 200 lb seat and 500 lb open, and max RPM will be 6500 RPM.

Harland Sharp makes a set specifically for TW heads that they sell through Fox Lake. I like the idea of the chromemoly Comp Cams Pro Magnums for strength. Any opinions? Also, do you really need a Twisted-wedge-specific roller rocker for TW heads?

Thanks,
MAtt

That's what I'm running on my TF heads. I'd called Trick Flow and asked if those rockers were compatible with their heads, they said yes

I wonder why Fox Lake/Harland Sharp claim you should use TW-specific roller rockers (with an offset pushrod location I believe). Even Trick Flow says that standard small-block Ford roller rockers can be used.

Adding now: XE274R solid roller, Fox Lake ported TW heads, Carb Shop 750 DP

SBC rockers can be used also. You might have to change your pushrod length, not sure. I was running a set of TFS TW heads and used the SBC rockers that Summit had their name on. Back then they were the Crane gold rockers, only black. Call me nuts, but the Chev. rockers are cheaper and easier to find. Like I said you might have to change pushrods, as my engine was built from the ground up, and I used new pushrods anyway.

The Chevy rockers are shorter from the fulcrum pivot to the roller than a Ford rocker. They will NOT provide proper valvetrain geometry on a head designed for a ford rocker arm.

That being said... The very first TFS Twisted Wedge heads were built with a design flaw. It was nearly impossible to get decent rocker arm geometry with them. People were wearing out valve guides before their first oil change! One of the available fixes for these heads was to use Chevy rocker arms and different length pushrods. This would allow the geometry to get set within acceptable limits.

Trick Flow finally fixed the design flaw, and invited people with the older heads to send them in for free to get the rocker geometry fixed. I had a set of the old heads (still do) and sent them back. They came back with some machining and a slightly different set of guide plates. That dates back to the mid 90's. Yes, I bought those heads when they first came out back then, and have still not run them. However, they will be making some noise this summer.

Now you know!

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I hope my TW heads do not fall into that category. I bought them in late '97/early '98 timeframe. They have about 5-10K miles on them and I couldn't tell of any valve guide problem.

There should be a number at the Trickflow site you can call. They should be able to tell you if they are the 'early' heads or not. Again, I was able to send my heads in for FREE to get geometry fixed. They will probably need the serial number off the heads.

Good Luck!
